I got one of those too, from "Alya", which seems to be an LLM-based tool the creator describes as his daughter. Beyond the usual rudeness of spam, that's a little creepy.

You should call these folks/companies out by name, they aren't respecting you, your time, or situation.

And give them free publicity and SEO Juice?

They also have no spaces around the em dash. Must be followers of Chicago Manual of Style (and not AP Stylebook.)

> Must be followers of Chicago Manual of Style (and not AP Stylebook.) You know, there are more than two possible choices. I scorn to subject myself to any style guide for my personal writing… let alone an American one. People used em-dash-sans-space long before CMOS was dreamed up. I sha’n’t follow all the older traditions I find, but I do frequently favour them.

Those people don't think they're spamming. They're caught up in their own hype and think they're offering the opportunity of a lifetime -- even though they don't know what they want, exactly. A good general tip is that every email should begin with a "bottom line, up front" (BLUF). Tell people what you want, need, or recommend first. Then provide supporting details.

Like a Minto pyramid. I agree.

First time poster on those HN threads and I also got somewhat strange experience. Not exactly the same but a suspiciously strange co-incidence. I got an unsolicited offer from someone with assistecinformatica.com.br mail to sell my main domain. No surprise that some bots trying to harvest users domains with mail reputation for their purposes from "Who wants to be hired" threads.

The other side of this isn't sunshine and roses either. Imagine you're a reasonably talented developer and just can't seem to break into a good job. You've been working delivery or something to make ends meet, and somebody finally offers a tech job. It isn't much, but your kids are hungry. You'll take it. You show up, and it's everything the cynics here could have told you. Spamming people for money is the least of y…

You're good at writing

Thank you :)

I was unemployed for a couple years. I’ve never felt this horrible about my situation ever. My last unemployment bout, I was in final rounds of interviews with Microsoft, Netflix, Google, Amazon… it was a feast of riches! Then… the market changed. I couldn’t even get an interview. (I’m a senior data architect/engineer/strategist, etc.). I don’t know how many applications I sent but well into the thousands. And heard back from none of them, other than an automated “we really appreciate that you took the time to… but we have decided…”

Anyway, I finally got a personal referral to a position and was hired within a week.

My takeaway: new grads are screwed. It’s all about referrals and intros. And LinkedIn is a garbage heap. Apply for nothing on that site.

I remember getting so hopeful about an email from a recruiter for a role that seemed like a perfect fit. They strung me along for a bit until they started asking for my SSN and bank info. Another one strung me along to try and get me to pay for an ATS-compliant resume.

Meanwhile, I’m balancing between groceries and electricity as a single mom, with the mortgage company patiently waiting for me to get a job (j/k they weren’t patient.)

Anyway, I finally finally finally am in what seems like a good place so 1. Please don’t lose hope 2. Join any networking communities in your field that you can because intros are everything.

I’m happy to review your resume or make intros.

Not to troll but what is a "forced immigrant"?

A more than valid question! It's the only way I could figure out how to economically convey "I am a Russian who decided to leave Russia to not be complicit and because my history of protests and support for opposition makes it scary to stay, while I completely understand the level of privilege I'm enjoying and can't call myself a refugee even remotely". Even though I always wanted to live abroad, I didn't decide when…

"I have to leave my home country because my political stances makes it unsafe for me to stay" is like the textbook definition of political refugee.

With all respect for Mr. Stallman, he has faced consequences of his choice of being childless, and it has been quite distressing for him. Recently he was campaigning against being banned (or not accepted as a speaker) from schools. At age 70 something it must be quite hard not to have children or grandkids, but for parents to block you from their kids is even harder. At least that's how I understood his focus on clea…

AI slop and hallucinations are bad, but what your own human imagination is pulling out of your own human ass is so much more pernicious and intentionally slanderous and demeaning.

What proof do you have about anything you're claiming so confidently? Do you know him? Did he tell you that? Can you quote his own words, or at least cite your sources?

Uh, I think it has a lot more to do with the sexual harassment than being childless. Plenty of people without kids don't have this problem, and it's kind of silly to frame it as "well if he only had kids then he'd be fine..."

Yes, the sexual issues, harrasment or otherwise, are the reason he has trouble doing presentations in high schools. The childless issue is what makes this so important for him personally, otherwise I believe it wouldn't have been so pressing a matter for him to engage in a crusade. It's his chosen way to engage with the new generation, and he has lost access to it.

It's incredibly creepy for you to so confidently make such accusations about his state of mind and problems and motivations without evidence. So what is it?
