> It's not clearly labeled, it is a very small label with white text on a pale blue background in an already very busy UI. You piled a whole lot of arguments, but doesn't change the fact that it's still clearly labelled. Besides, you only need to notice this box once to be able to tell whether something marked the same way is an ad or not in the future. You're absolutely right on the real problem: it's allowed to pre…

There's a label and it rights "Ad" right under the name and description.

That we're even debating that this is clearly labeled as an ad is crazy talk.

> Many things are naturally repulsive, but are indulged out of necessity or gain Most "naturally repulsive" things were accepted just fine in one society or another. Aristole spent time to defend and rationalize slavery because that was just job, to spend time rationalizing things. Other societies practiced it with no such worries, and found it perfectly natural. But even if we grant you your "naturally repulsive" ac…

His arguments were generally driven by logic and reason, not rationalization. Rationalization is generally only necessary for adopting views that seem ostensibly inappropriate, which would certainly include these sort of 'naturally repulsive' acts. And indeed his arguments for slavery were some of his weakest precisely because they were uncharacteristic rationalizations. I completely agree that if you go back far eno…

I think that's an after-the-fact assessment of what his treatment of the subject was, which we arrive at because of our modern morals.

In his time he, and his audience, didn't think of it as rationalization, but as legitimate use of logic and reason, just like his treatment of other topics.

>But once you have that baseline of IQ then I think morality, and a natural repulsion to certain behaviors, comes as naturally as communication.

Might go the over way around too though: once you go above a certain IQ, it might be easier to treat morality as a fiction naked apes developed, as opposed to something objective, and even discard it entirely.

I’m really not a fan of this direction for Apple. One of the differentiators between iOS and Google was a lack of ads, which make the experience feel more premium. Increasing ads, or having them at all, really erodes the user experience. Apple managed to become the most valuable company in the world without ads. Adding them after hitting that milestone feels either greedy or desperate, maybe a little of both. I know…

This isn't ads all over your phone. It's ads for the App Store. Honestly the App Store looks gamed af as it stands and this might be a move toward curation (instead of letting the App Store descend into SEO hell).

That the first result is clearly marked as an ad is an opinion. One I don't agree with.

I think it’s a little of both. Sure, they have failures, not no one is perfect. I think the iPad is a good example. Bill Gates had a dream of the paperless office and tried to make the tablet PC happens by putting Windows XP on tablets with some pen support. I saw a few of them in my help desk days in college, but they never really caught on. They put a desktop OS on a tablet and it was annoying to use. They also tri…

Before that monster you described, there was Windows CE (Windows CE used a different kernel), specifically for mobile. It supported networking and peripherals. And it was very successful for years.

> It supported networking and peripherals.

Yeah, like a little stylus that you could use to touch the screen and move the mouse pointer around your mini Windows desktop! There was even a way to right-click. Seriously. Cue that sweet picture of a nerdy Bill Gates saying "tablets are so cool!"

Yeah, they seem to be moving from innovators to exploiting their user base. In particular, I interpret their AI failures as the innovator's dilemma. They have loads of highly paid people designing and creating beautiful UIs. A chatbot could replace a lot of this: just tell your phone what to do instead of clicking and swiping. But that would put most of their employees out of work. So instead they are going to milk a…

Apple spent a lot of time already doing a lot of this with Siri instead of focusing on external knowledge. This didn’t replace their UI people. Voice commands aren’t always appropriate and a UI is still needed. The UI for setting up a daily alarm is a little clunky, since it requires individually selecting each day. I needed to setup alarms for pills every 12 hours. Instead of doing this manually, I asked Siri to do…

C'mon. Five years ago I could still tell myself Siri is fine. Now it's embarrassing.

Apple isn’t the darling “it” product it’s been in years past.

Apps are addictive but not enriching our lives like we once thought.

Now you want to add advertising?

If a new product comes along and hits the right notes—maybe the e-ink variety, or Cat’s Android with thermal camera. I have the four previous, so I don’t imagine it as a trauma to step off the merry-go-round for my next phone.

Was recently thinking we should change tax law to exclude ad spend as a business expense so it gets taxed.

In EU, and freshly Japan, alternative iOS app stores are allowed. Let’s hope they manage to use this to their advantage. https://www.macrumors.com/2025/12/18/altstore-japan-launch/

and perhaps this new initiative for ads in the App Store is an attempt to replace the money lost by Europe and Japan allowing alternate app stores

Okay, blame the regulators. Apple is right as always.
