I always have to look up if it was Socrates or Plato who got sentenced to death for simultaneously being an atheist and worshiping new gods his city didn't recognise. Point is, you may not like it, but merely being cancelled rather than straight up executed is why we live in the good times. (And whatever the merits and demerits of unrestricted free speech, a machine that isn't deemed capable of personhood shouldn't g…

Yes, "literally anything less than execution is OK" is the standard we should uphold for public discourse.

This is like a joke that starts with "be grateful, comrade..."

I watched this for a few hours over the weekend and I haven't seen anything as lively or interactive on Twitch since TwitchPlaysPokemon. The chat truly made it hilarious: from tracking how many times the microwave turned on (MMMMMMMMMM), claiming new arcs of the show when common themes got brought up, or yelling about LORE when characters revealed their backstories. I hope this comes back soon, as it has been a source of surreal joy over the last few days for me.

sometimes you can't have nice things because there are people who will abuse them. there are actual Nazis out there who want to put people in ovens, so it's taboo to make jokes about how they may have a point. similar thing with trans people, you mention them and trolls come out of the woodwork saying they should kill themselves. there are a lot of horrible people and trollish behaviors online, and sometimes the only…

Let us not forget certain fascists who claimed they’d outlaw all trans people and force them to detransition. Let us not forget how many trans people have died at the hands of bigots.

Not only claimed, they've passed laws to that effect

The clip seemed pretty mild to me? Basically says that he wants to do the joke, but it got no laughter, so he's not doing it. You can see worse on an anonymous Twitter feed.

You have to put it in context. That stream is/was something very particular. The AI is terrible at making jokes, so the stream is funny to watch because it's a non-stop torrent of repeated failed attempts at telling jokes. "Regular" jokes are delivered in the exact same way, with the exact same result. What you are reading as intentional irony and/or sarcasm really is just you projecting your expectations. There is n…

But the AI has no intention.. unless you call the prompt fed to it its intention. You're anthropomorphising it.

The way its output is received is all that matters.

“Cancel culture” will die when faith in the legal system is restored.

Man, I hope our legal system never gets to the point where "advocating nonviolent protest (as opposed to political violence)" (and the other silly things people get canceled for) are not outlawed and prosecuted.

Everybody seems up in arms about this situation, but I find the whole thing hilarious. After half a decade of AI hype without many uses in the wild, we finally live at a point in history where "AI-generated Jerry Seinfeld makes transphobic joke, gets cancelled" is not an Onion headline.

Uncharacteristically off-topic comment from me, I guess, but when do humans get to a point where we no longer have to appeal to the lowest common denominator? How are our relationships supposed to improve if we dub anything that makes us uncomfortable as "taboo" and steer clear of it? I get that on the Internet there is a lot of anonymity (though less than there used to be) that folks tend to abuse, but at the same t…

I think this is a perfect summation of the issue. Not allowing public discourse will always result in entrenche, extreme, and polarizing views.

If you click through to the mirror from the /r/livestreamfail page, the clip actually comes across (to me) as making fun of the people who make those kinds of jokes.

I don't see how including a comment that the offensive jokes aren't funny make them less offensive.

As if anything is innocuous if couched like "Here are some jokes I would tell except they aren't funny: (a series of offensive jokes)"
