But Google actually knows how to do research and how to apply it to products. Meta's AI research hasn't produced anywhere near as many state of the art products /revolutionary achievements.

> But Google actually knows how to do research and how to apply it to products. I have seen basically no evidence of this. Google knows how to do research to create technology. Google is pretty terrible at creating product though.

Google knows how to do research - and at the very least lets other people figure out the products, and then becomes the #3 or #4 player.

Both GCP and Gemini are products of this. Modern cloud was arguably built by Google (think Chubby, GFS, Bigtable as building blocks) - they just spent 10 years ceding it to Amazon before competing.

I kept saying to myself, they must be seeing something I'm not... I guess not

The product isn't Facebook, Quest, or Instagram. The product isn't advertising. The product isn't even people. The product is the stock price. Viewed through that lens, keeping the hype going at all costs makes sense.

Yea - and what a foolproof product. Chase $HYPE, boost stock price, quietly deprecate $HYPE in favor of $NEXT_HYPE, stock doesn't correct, just goes up more

you could do this forever!

They actually did that before, if i recall correctly?

They've done something like it in poorer countries, I believe, but it's more about subsidizing the connection. There's certainly marketshare they could work with in USA and Europe. $70 billion is 70 million phones.

Yes, Internet.org in 2015, (later rebranded as Free Basics) according to an AI

No, they've done this in the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_First. https://www.cnet.com/pictures/a-look-at-the-htc-first-aka-th...

> Interesting, cutting way back in the product they renamed the whole company for. It was clearly the wrong bet. He pumped something like $100B into the endeavour (Meta Quest / VR / Horizons) and it is just slowly dying as we speak. He has to give up on it, although I am sure it will be called a "pivot" into AR glasses.

Yeah, it was a bizarre decision. There isn't a clear ROI on games and that's what Horizon Worlds has been the whole time. There's no equation that says a 100M game automatically makes 100x more than a 1M game on average. If anything the equation is sub-linear. 100B just doesn't seem like the right size for a game investment.

100B wasn't spent on a game. The RL org is much larger than Horizon Worlds, or even VR

Unbelievable. They re-architected the whole operating system around this stupid app. They discontinued their previous homescreen environments in favor of trying to promote Horizon Worlds, only to discontinue the blasted thing anyway? After all of those millions of dollars spent trying to make virtual events happen?

No, not millions. Billions. Like $70+ billion.

Thats a lot of money to (attempt to) remake Ready Player One, and then abandon it??

The most obvious and expected outcome to everyone except Zuck.

Zuck has become a very rich man avoiding all the obvious and expected outcomes. When Facebook stock hit its low a few years ago, HN was explaining why it was doomed. The man has founder mentality at the helm of a trillion-dollar company. It is no wonder he is what he is.

Past performance is not indicative of future results

VR games are actually kind of neat and fun. But it’s too much of a hassle to set the thing up every time and, I dunno, the association with Facebook is too icky. It would have been really interesting to see what Oculus could have become without getting bought. I do think they were a little neat idea, not at all ready for Facebook sized projects.

As I've heard and said elsewhere -- VR Games are absolutely like a day at the fair. But no one wants to go to the fair EVERY DAY.

Love the way you put it, spot on.
