The margins on inference definetly aren’t negative. An easy way to check this is by looking at the costs of using cloud hosted open source models, which necessarily are served at a positive margin, and are much lower $/token than what you get from the labs.

Nothing to say about the article which is well written, and I sort of agree with it, but what's up with the US being enamored with "vibe"-anything? Can we stop using the word unnecesarily (along with "x energy"), please? It sounds deeply stupid.

I don't think moral licensing is the correct term here. Moral licensing is when you justify doing something that is morally bad because you did something that was morally good. And a great deal of the talking shops/podcasts/keynotes/nonprofits around AI existential risk are all part of this same play. They receive funding from the large AI companies so that the latter can continue to talk their own books using this angle.
