Obviously there is a huge amount of money and effort being spent on automated driving. If anything, it's the opposite: most people in this space (Elon, George Hotz, Demis, etc.) have been saying for a very long time that autonomous driving is just the first step, and that their objective is to build world models.

When are they going to trivally stop breaking traffic laws? Unlike human driven cars, 100% of Waymos are fully filmed. The proof is on every drive. And there is one entity responsible for all of them, Waymo. I've enjoyed my trips so far, but want them to stop breaking the law.

I don't. There's the written rules of the road, and then there's reality. I'd rather they drive like humans do.

As somebody very far away from any even partially autonomous cars, what kind of laws do they break?

I've been in a Waymo that's run a red light.

Humans also get into accidents all the time, that's not a great benchmark.

$50k? The sensor kit on the Waymo’s ipace is north of $300k. (Which completely inverts that calculation)

It's between 7k (chinese) and 17k (european) now.

I fully agree with your first point: Musk has shown tremendous ability to manage companies to become unicorns. He's clearly skilled in this domain. Lowest cost per mile will win and Tesla's cyber cab doesn't need expensive suite of sensors. They use lidar in their validation/calibration test cars which is the correct use of lidar. People are already driving USA coast to coast without an SINGLE intervention. It's already over, Tesla has won, Waymo cant compete on cost.

Tesla is using the ill-advised "make it cheap before you make it work" approach.

I'm an EE, I have worked with things like sensor fusion professionally. In short sensor fusion depends on what sensors you have and how you combine them, especially if two sensors' outputs tend to disagree - which one is wrong and to what extent, and how a piece of noise gets reflected in each sensors' outputs, to avoid double counting errors and coming up with unjustifyably confident results. You rely on a moving camera, microphones and vibrations all together. Driven by a supposedly more advanced meatware than what tech can create today, so that it can properly reason even with faulty/missing signals.
