Isn't starlink and its competitors a cheaper way for rural places to get fast internet?

We’re on about our third attempt at rural internet in Ireland. The first two involved wasting a lot of money subsidising dubious cellular and satellite stuff which was arguably marginally good enough 20 years ago, but not now. Thankfully on the third go the government decided to stop screwing around and just do 10gbit-capable fibre to all rural premises. Ultimately if you half-ass this you just end up doing it again…

It's probably more for the rich people: planes, boats, cruise ships... private island...

I've been considering upgrading from 1 Gbps to 5 Gbps. Have you noticed any significant benefits for any particular use cases?

For me, with upgraded networking it's been huge. Much faster downloads and uploads, I can share more with family members, and when multiple people are using my bandwidth, no slowdowns. Most of my equipment is 2.5g, but still is a fairly significant upgrade, and the per month additional cost is $30/month so makes it worth it to me.

Not sure if I'm surprised negatively or positively by the fact. My apartment (Germany) was built in 2017 and coax in every room was the choice planners made :_)

Because back then cable TV was a common inclusion in apartments that could be unilaterally be added to "Nebenkosten" and was therefor sold to landlords as such a nice benefit by cable providers.

I know it was common, and it's sad state of things if cable is a common thing in frickin' 2017
