They all start with "Hi, [incorrect name], I am reaching out because..." And yes, for the last 2 years or so, 100% of these unsolicited E-mails include my fake name.

All my life I've gone by my middle name, and it's turned out to be useful in a similar way. When I receive a message or phone call and they address me by my first name, I immediately know it's someone who doesn't really know who I am.

Sorry you're going through this Ilya. I hope things improve for you and your family.

As an aside, I'm kinda curious what the intent of these spammers is. Do they really think they're going to get a rockstar employee using these tactics? They must know these methods aren't effective.

You're right. It's obviously a mix. And I'm like you, I put it out there to see what will come up, but I won't starve tomorrow. Still, the sentiment of: professionals should behave professionally, and this forum should be collegial and also recognize things are pretty tough out there for many people right now... that stands. This is a professional forum. I mean, even more important than LinkedIn, because it connects founders and top industry people, directly with folks at all stages of their careers.

One thing that sometimes stuns me, is that some people treat this like it's a personal Reddit sub or a Facebook comments section. They insult each other, and show their ass in a big way.

I assume this is because of the casual, accessible nature of the site. Billionaires probably have better things to do, but there's a lot of multi-millionaire C-suiters, here. Their profiles look just as ratty as a new grad's, though, so I guess people don't understand that.

I still like it, because that behavior is a tiny part of the experience (partly/mostly due to the great moderation). I usually find that I enjoy a lot of the discussion here.

LinkedIn just sucks. I spend exactly zero time, there.

I don’t understand how that follows. The poster in this thread is looking for a job. How are they supposed to give someone a job if they’re searching for one themselves?

My understanding is that: - they assume jobseeker/spammers through those bots contact anyone being active in the HN "who wants to be hired" - one should show empathy for them because they are also in need for a job, and not complain about those dishonest methods

This reminded me of my dad. Years ago, as a sort of hobby, my dad used to change up his middle initial when he gave out his name info. E.g., John X. Smith, John Y. Smith, John Z. Smith. Then when he received (then snail mail) solicitations, he could track them based on the middle initial on the envelope.

Whether it helps or not—the typical contact like this hasn’t been a human for decades now. What I’m seeing these days is materially almost identical to what went out ten years ago. Basic form letter with a cover sentence or paragraph of either no relevance, or a tenuous but normally ill-researched claim at relevance.

Yeah, but in the last few months, they've definitely been better targeted. I've found myself reading at least the first few lines to figure out where they got their info about me from.

You'll need to convince the court that you were not aware they were the North Koreans. You run a very real risk of jail, not just becoming unbanked.

That's a pretty silly argument to me. No other species uses toilets, wears clothes, or posts on Hacker News, but we don't treat those as arguments that we have to act like them in those ways.
