I haven't looked at Apple in a long time. The page reads like a parody, and I had to double check that I was actually on apple.com. The whole industry seems to be in a place where everyone just accepts that most good things are now ruined anyway, so might as well ruin them some more.

I think this is a good move from Apple.

They will make a lot more money. Their customers will keep buying their phones.

They want a slick looking, fashionable cell phone. The usability has been horrid forever.

They probably can have ads and increase the price.

You picked a bad example. The iPod was very innovative (first time you could have all your music with you on the go – instead of having to decide on a tiny selection before you leave home and slowly upload it to your player). But yeah, that was decades ago. And with Jobs, innovation has left.

The first iPod had 5 GB of storage, less than e.g. the Creative Nomad Jukebox which had 6 GB. If you were around at the time you may remember the (in)famous verdict of CmdrTaco [1]: . No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame. So no, the fruit factory did not produce the first device which could haul your entire music collection. What they did is what has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread: they took an existin…

Against using Nomad a strong counterexample: they were almost certainly developing the device before the Nomad came out, so they might have been innovative in the sense that they were working on a device that they hadn’t seen before.

In my recollection, though, a bigger hard drive did not really feel like an innovation. It might have just been that I was a kid, but my music library was not so huge, and it was possible to reduce the file sizes anyway (especially given how crappy ear buds were at the time, and anyway, how good was the dac in a cheap mp3 player at the time?).

We were used to the idea that hard drive sizes might make a big jump anyway, it was still the era of dramatic leaps and bounds.

Finally, you probably had a binder full of CDs anyway (burned CDs if you were cool of course), so you could play them in a car. So, the concept of having much more “drive space” in some sense was not at all new. (And the UI of a binder full of CDs is much more intuitive than any MP3 player!).

Rather, the iPod didn’t really have any big new ideas. It’s just that nothing about it sucked. The hard drive was pretty big, the UI was good enough, the clickey wheel thing was fun, the audio quality was fine. No new ideas, B+ all around, and nothing to make you want to given up on it.

Have you browsed F-Droid?

Yup half of the apps don't work :D

I appreciate you giving it a shot, then! Our experiences are pretty different; I've almost always found solid working apps from F-Droid, and my main messenger, web browser, podcast app, ebook reader, RSS reader, calendar, tower defense game, and home screen launcher are all from F-Droid. I use the Play Store mostly for Google's own apps (namely Maps and YT Music) and my banking app.

A clear blue ad label!! Is this sarcasm? Your remark is so dystopian, you full accepted this as normal. Btw, I'm checking now, the label "ad" is not there, it's just highlighted. Or is it that blue tag? I thought that signified in-app ads? Shouldn't the highlight itself have a label? Probably this is some A/B test optimized BS, that tag was the option where most people WRONGLY clicked on the stuff they didn't search…

It must be absolutely exhausting to be so pissed off about every little thing like this.

It can certainly be. But I try to just focus on alternatives.

But it really pisses me off when I spend money on something, and then after that it enshitifies (ie Philips/Signify Hue).

Ah well, being annoyed by and pissed off at iOS just makes me spend less time on the thing, so that's good.

Many things are naturally repulsive, but are indulged out of necessity or gain. For instance Aristotle wasn't opposed to slavery, yet nonetheless in his writings, now some 2400+ years ago, he found himself obligated to lay out an extensive and lengthy defense and rationalization of such, and he even predicted what would eventually end it: "For if every instrument could accomplish its own work, obeying or anticipating…

> Many things are naturally repulsive, but are indulged out of necessity or gain Most "naturally repulsive" things were accepted just fine in one society or another. Aristole spent time to defend and rationalize slavery because that was just job, to spend time rationalizing things. Other societies practiced it with no such worries, and found it perfectly natural. But even if we grant you your "naturally repulsive" ac…

His arguments were generally driven by logic and reason, not rationalization. Rationalization is generally only necessary for adopting views that seem ostensibly inappropriate, which would certainly include these sort of 'naturally repulsive' acts. And indeed his arguments for slavery were some of his weakest precisely because they were uncharacteristic rationalizations.

I completely agree that if you go back far enough in the evolutionary pipeline then my claim becomes invalid. I also think it would not apply to people of a sufficiently reduced IQ. You need to have a minimum of intelligence to understand what you're doing, alternatives, and its consequences on others. But once you have that baseline of IQ then I think morality, and a natural repulsion to certain behaviors, comes as naturally as communication.

I’m really not a fan of this direction for Apple. One of the differentiators between iOS and Google was a lack of ads, which make the experience feel more premium. Increasing ads, or having them at all, really erodes the user experience. Apple managed to become the most valuable company in the world without ads. Adding them after hitting that milestone feels either greedy or desperate, maybe a little of both. I know…

They already plaster iOS with ads...just for their own services and it's disguised as a system feature. It's especially obvious if you don't subscribe to paid iCloud and see ads for "Apple Arcade", "Increase iCloud Drive storage space", "Sign up for Apple Music", "Have you heard of Apple Fitness+" or "New show on Apple TV+"-push notifications everywhere. Something that in theory they discourage to use these for promo…

I've no need to defend Apple but I don't see this. I don't see any of those things, ever. What am I doing differently?

> Search is the way most people find and download apps on the App Store, with nearly 65 percent of downloads happening directly after a search This is misleading - does it mean people are searching for an app that they already know about and want to download - chatgpt, samsung, gmail etc. Or searching for a topic or problem and see what apps are available - LLM, camera, running etc. I rarely do the latter - using web…

Exactly. This is just a racket so that bad apps can "steal" downloads by getting in the way. The good apps then also need to pay the racket to fight the bad apps.

Yup, and this is the thing Apple really doesn't have to do because they make plenty of money. Enough that they never need to run ads; but certainly enough that you should never be allowed to pay to be at the top of app searches. It forces the actual best hit to pay to be a hit. I just searched for ‘Jellyfin’ and got an ad for an app that tells you your Spotify stats.

Example: Settings / Your Name / iCloud. There I have an add to download "Apple Invites".

>but imagine how insanely negatively received it would be if apt upgrade So what already happens when you ssh into an Ubuntu server to run apt upgrade to manually update it. It turns out people don't care that much.

I think they do care. In the gaming community, Ubuntu has gone from about 40% to 10% marketshare since 2018. https://youtu.be/Pwt216nn0zE Now, you might say this is because of the influence of SteamOS, but I think you’d be hard pressed to argue that Ubuntu has been getting more popular overall. Linux users have a choice while iOS and Android users essentially don’t.

I am talking in relation server market share since the ad is targeted towards people running servers.
