I like X11 better than Wayland, but it's kind of hard for me to be mad at other people for ... not doing something I'm also not doing?

They are doing something, they created a FAKE alternative for X11 that in fact is just a protocol for a micro subset of X11.

I tried wayland multiple times before, but the lack of xsct equivalent and the awful input delay (compared to X11 window managers without compositor) made my experience very frustrating. Some might say "it's just a one or two frame delay", but for me that makes a night and day difference. Just an additonal frame delay gives me a feeling of driving a 70s American boat car with worn out tires.

That's okay since X11 is stable and not very crash prone for the last few decades. The WM and Shell are far more likely to crash, which is it's completely fucking retarded to move any of their logic into the display server.

applications can reconnect to the compositor, KDE already supports this, and Qt does too. They also contributed code to gtk/gnome to do the same, which they are slowpoking on..

you are talking about things you do not know enough about

its not true though, when a wayland compositor dies, the clients can simply reconnect once the compositor has started again. this is already implemented in KDE and Qt, and KDE contributed patches to GTK/Gnome(which they havenot merged yet i think).

A crash of the wayland compositor does NOT mean a crash of your entire session, in fact it is more resilient than X11 in this way

MATE is specifically a fork of GNOME 2, and works pretty much exactly like it did. there's a similar fork of KDE 3 called trinity that you might want to check out

Didn't know Spectacle can do screen recordings now. Just tried it: The "New Recording" button seems to be broken. It does nothing. No error message on the terminal even. Maybe it only works under Wayland?
