> It is "hard for anyone except larger companies to benefit from the underlying technology," OpenAI stated. Ugh. This is the part of the recent AI advancement that annoys me the most. The web, at least in its infancy, was pretty accessible to individual hobbyists. You could run a web server on your own computer. AI technology seems highly centralized from the start.

If you expand your timeline a little bit you'll reach a spot where the computers, equipment and comms necessary to create a computer network were highly centralized and only run by large corporations and institutions. How many times do we need to see this pattern for it to be obvious?

History does NOT NECESSARILY repeat itself.

The web in its infancy only worked because of the massive infrastructure that allowed your server to talk to others. In the same way you can tinker with your own web server, you can tinker with AI tech. You just can't reasonably train it independently, though the cost in terms of compute resources is something like 1% of what it was many years ago.

Thanks dang. Space man bad tangents are really tiresome and contribute nothing to the discussion.

To quote Spaceballs, they're not doing it for money, they're doing it for a shitload of money.

OpenAI, if successful, will likely become the most valuable company in the history of the planet, both past and future.

Really? I see a lot of competition in the space. I think they’d have to become significantly more successful than their competitors (some of which are massive AI powerhouses themselves) to achieve the market dominance necessary.

I like that the corporate bullshit just keeps getting more. Google’s “don’t be evil” is many steps down from openai having open in their name. They should be called Open AI with ( not open) in small print. I argue a lot over “open source” software with non-OSI license and sometimes worry if I’m too pedantic. But I think it’s important to use terms accurately and not to confuse reality more than it already is by calli…

,,I wonder if google and openai truly started out with these ideals and were just corrupted and overpowered by standard organizational greed'' With Google Eric Schmidt explained how it came: quite often when they were breainstorming about product launches, and something looked like it can grow the company, but is immoral to do, some person interrupted: ,,that would be evil''. As Eric was trying to organize the compan…

This was historically described as "When google was going to hire it's first MBA, an engineer coined the phrase 'dont be evil' and went around spreading inside the company"

So I don't know how to square it with this recent info, but I would say Eric's recent interview is a creative re-interpretation of the circumstances. As execs tend to do.

Let's hope that they aren't there, given your nicely concealed prediction it'll be the end of the world as we know it.

seriously doubt it - what they are doing, others can do - and if they start generating a lot of revenue, it will attract competition - lots of it.

They don't have a moat big enough that many millions of dollars can't defeat.

Seriously, is there anyone naive enough to have swallowed any of their trips? Corporations don't have ethical compasses, much less corporations founded by VCs aka professional salesmen.

I (parent commenter) may be naive but I actually believe the original intent was probably sincere; I suspect either political shenanigans, greed, gatekeeping or any number of other vices have come rushing with success and shedloads of money, and the original ethical stance was not accompanied by the significant moral courage needed to sustain purity under enormous pressure from either less principled stakeholders, or…
