You've tripped right over the difference though. Corporations aren't people. They do not and cannot present a personal threat to you. Even your trailing example falls flat on this: for the activity to be distressing you had to recontextualize it back to the individual level.

It might be worth revisiting the definition of the term "Banana Republic" and the history of the United Fruit Company[1].

Corporations have toppled democratic governments, run dodgy drug trials and given breast feeding mothers just enough free powdered milk to stop being able to feed their babies.

We have large online retailers, Temu and Shein, accused of using forced labour aka slavery.

Even a well known SaaS operation like eBay was caught sending live spiders to woman who criticised them[2].

Corporations are entities with legal rights but are motivated solely by profit. Without laws to regulate them they would unemotionally run right over you.

Corporation are, and I choose my words carefully, absolute cunts.

They can 100% can present a threat to you. We wouldn't have the concept of corporate manslaughter if they didn't.

The fun part about this comment is that we don't know if "Intel" is the company, or the term for the IC. I'm pretty sure it's equally likely to be either meaning, and no surprise based on whichever is correct.

cors stops the browser from reading the response but the request still gets processed by the server

Browsers use OPTIONS preflight request to do CORS validation. Servers shouldn't do too much work in an OPTIONS request. Should be a simple if statement, no db operations, which is usually where the bottleneck is.

One of the few reasons to use iPhone is that it doesn't constantly surveil you. If Apple would just pivot and say "next iPhone will constantly record everything it hears and sees to process for our AI (Apple Intelligence(tm))" a lot of people would drop iPhone. Apple Watch is just extension of screen and notifications from the phone, so there is no overlap. AirTags have nothing to do with AI stuff. AirPods apparently…

I feel like sooner or later we all hollow out a little more. All this data is either used to prevent crime or to influence your thoughts and what you do in the world. Outsourcing your thinking to something else leads to digital dementia. What is the point of all of this technology?
