The quality of responses has generally gotten worse the more that all the AI providers have leaned on search. Now it’s default on for everything and annoying to turn off. The response you get back when search is off can be the complete opposite and is often more interesting.

In my experience without search I end up with an hallucination fest more time than not. In one sense that might be more interesting but I'm not sure that's what you mean :)

I wouldn’t call it a hallucination fest. If you’re using the models for anything other than a juiced up google search then turning search off, at least until it’s actually needed, is better in my opinion.

Right. So that's what one guy can do. When you realize how much astroturf is going into Reddit, most social media platforms, and the efforts to manipulate wikipedia for political gain, this is a very real problem.

And it’s one that already affects Google’s AI results, whether intentional or not. 9/10 if a Reddit thread or scraped StackExchange clone’s search result is in the top of the list, the AI answer pretty much parrots it.

This has led to many a “that doesn’t sound right” when looking things up with friends, or odd technical questions that have serviceable information available but not at the top of results.

That's the same attitude as "cheap airfares caused too many tourists which ruined my favorite tourist destination". You're unhappy that more people have access to it and wish it was still exclusive to the small group you conveniently belong to. Capitalism is what made the internet available to the general public.

It’s not the presence of the general public that ruined the internet, it’s the make-a-buck-at-all-costs attitude generated by capitalism that did it.

The general public are only able and willing to use the internet because of the capitalism! When it was an academic thing, most people didn't care at all, and even if they did, they'd have to have social connections to gain access. Even when consumer ISPs were widespread, internet use was still much smaller than today because it wasn't as engaging without capitalism's social media.
