Kimmel was canceled explicitly because of a threat by the government. Carr has made that clear.

The FCC, like other federal agencies, is independent. There's nothing in the article to suggest that Carr's decision to do this has anything to do with Trump, who doesn't actually have authority here. Per the article, Carr apparently doesn't think he did anything coercive either. He's just making public statements. The supposed "threat" doesn't seem to me like much of one. And Carr is also irrelevant to the Kimmel fi…

Trump does not share your view that they are an independent agency.

Carr also does not appear share your extremely charitable interpretation of his actions. He has subsequently confirmed that he sees this in line with the administration's larger political mission and is being about as subtle as a fog horn about his status as a political hatchet man:

I'm not a US citizen so take what I write below with a grain of salt. I always thought the US to be a stronghold of democracy and free speech. I know, it's a naive view and we know how huge companies and corrupt politicians can subvert the system. But still, I thought it had a decent law system that, although imperfect like any other system, kept things from going back to the dark ages. I don't believe that anymore a…

Every single story and moral guidance I've ever been told from childhood, whether from movies, books, church, or culture in general is that people like those in power right now are the bad guys. I no longer have any idea what people on the other side actually think. I don't think they know anymore either. I think they just want to exert power…

While I don't much care for either Kimmel nor The View - this is ridiculously corrupt, authoritarian, thuggish, illegal and arrogant behavior and cannot be allowed to stand. And shame on Disney for caving. Cowards who kneel down to kiss the ring in the face of blatantly illegal threats are not worthy of a position of public trust. And over a merger no less. I can't think of a better moral justification to prevent a c…

An issue was that the right was being canceled for views not even 5 years ago and the same people complaining about Kimmel are having their exact quotes replayed justifying those types of cancellations. From a game theoretic standpoint, tit for tat is exactly what’s supposed to happen to stabilize the situation. This has actually been proven by mathematicians that apply decision making theories to social structures.

This never occurred and you're completely full of it. No democratic government official ever pressured anyone to be cancelled.

It actually sickens me how many people that supposedly cared about liberty just completely switched their schtick overnight. I'm not surprised that some of these people were two faced liars, I'm just surprised by the sheer scale and the shamelessness of it. It's like I'm living in a world surrounded by aliens.

It should not surprise you. They hold no position. In fact the positions they do hold are mostly lies (as we can see small gov, debt reduction, law and order). The only policies that are real are the evil ones: deploying military against civilians, transforming ICE into brutal terrorists, bankrupting the country through tax cuts, etc ... The GOP strategy has been to break the government, claim it doesn't work so they can defund it, foment fear and hatred, and flat out reject Democracy. Why? Because their policies are abhorrent and hateful and only help by a few rich "Christian" natrionalists.

> The general consensus in my circles is that for the past decade "our side" have been advocating cooperation, while the other side repeatedly defects.

If this is really truly the case, explain the J6 insurrection. Trump lied for 2 months about the election results. Summoned his supporters, who literally show up with weapons flying Trump / Confederate / Nazi flags side by side, sacked the capitol, attempted to murder the Vice President and Speaker of the House. They engaged in what was described as "medieval combat" for hours. People died, cops and injured for life.

To this day, the people in power who you say are not the bad guys refuse to admit responsibility for what happened and pardoned all the people who committed those crimes on his behalf.

How do you square what happened then with your assertion that "the past decade "our side" have been advocating cooperation"?

> absurdly hard to find in all the coverage. By design. If it was actually offensive Fox would be playing it non-stop. The offense has been excavated from inside an implication of a phrase in a nested clause in a sentence saying something unrelated. Kimmel said (as part of an argument that republicans were playing politics by pointing fingers) that republicans were trying to prove that Robinson was not a republican ,…

What do the people claiming to be offended find offensive about it? I thought the issue was the orange one didn't like him and wanted him cancelled.

Well, that is the "real" issue, sure. But the pretense was that Kimmel accused republicans of inspiring the killer.

The US system was strongly dependent on everyone basically behaving themselves; it has very poor defences against people willing to break the rules.

> The sentence is convoluted but clearly implies that "this kid" was "one of the MAGA gang". What? This is crazy “find the authors purpose” gymnastics. The quote does nothing to imply that the kids is Maga or not. It does however directly commentates on “Maga gang”’s actions to try to paint him as anyone other than someone who could be MAGA. Thats the entire point of what was said

> The quote does nothing to imply that the kids is Maga or not. It does however directly commentates on “Maga gang”’s actions to try to paint him as anyone other than someone who could be MAGA In every universe where the shooter is not "MAGA" (which, on the available evidence, includes ours), "trying to paint him as anyone else" is truthful, and not wrong. The entire point of a critique of this sort is to allege that…

> The sentence does carry the implication that Kimmel is calling the shooter "MAGA"

True.

> because otherwise there would be no reason, in Kimmel's position, to say any of it.

Untrue. In context, what he's saying (this is clear in the sentences before and after) is that MAGA is playing politics by arguing about attribution. Remember in the early hours it did look like the shooter might have been a groyper, and even Fuentes himself came out to disavow violence. By Kimmel's monologue, the trans angle had diluted that obviously. But if we're playing interpretation games you can point out he was using past tense, right?

The "offensive" content needs to be deliberately inferred, and the appropriate response is to clarify and apologize. We all know what actually happened isn't about what Kimmel actually said.
