Why doesn't the government have a few planes or blimps fly overhead with base stations from the major mobile carriers?

FEMA has no budget for it

Which is better, a fleet of rescue helicopters or a fleet of wifi blimps? I'm not sure FEMA would ever have the budget for a fleet of wifi blimps.

Note that you can be anti-Russia and anti-Ukraine at the same time.

Also, crucially, Starlink has been proactive in trying to disconnect Russian operatives who have managed to attain a Starlink connection. All the same, Elon’s backing of Trump doesn’t bode well for a good outcome for Ukraine (nor other ex-USSR satellites that are feeling very nervous right now)

I've been a lifelong liberal and won't vote Democrat after seeing how SpaceX and Tesla are being treated by the liberal media, including the publishing of outright fake news by so called reputable outlets. I don't support Trump or Putin or dictators in general. If I vote Republican at some point it'd be an anti-Democrat vote.

Democrats aren’t the liberal media, and the current Democratic controlled government also happen to be subsidizing both SpaceX and Tesla

Or put another way Musk is anti censorship, anti war in Ukraine, anti complying with the Harris/Biden agenda to deplatform political rivals such as they did 4 days after Biden took office, forcing Pre Musk Twitter/X and Facebook to do their bidding - or else. Turns out the ones squawking loudest about the other being a threat to democracy are in fact the ones actively working against our Constitutional Rights. And I’…

You made the above statement in response to one user, and then a different user replied who has a 9-month-old account and 1/3 of his comments include "Tesla":

You called it. The astroturfing is off the charts! And the user who replied to your comment pulled the "As a black man" routine just like the user you replied to. LOL.

What number would you have been good with? $5? That $20 could have been useful. Imagine how much more money the average taxpayer would have if the government didn't spend that 0.001% of it's budget. You'd be complaining about any amount. Or do you think they wouldn't have complained if it was only $600M? Just be honest and state what you really feel: the government shouldn't spend any money assisting communities with…

Hard to say, given I just found out about this situation. I think it's higher than $20 for sure, but probably less than half than a billion. I think a more in depth analysis of the circumstances that led to the need to spend that money in the first place would be in order. Can you tell me why I am supposed to answer your questions, but you have successfully dodged all of mine while levying personal attacks however? S…

Blame Congress. (1) they control budget and can add the additional funds. They also know that half a billion is being "diverted" from acute disaster relief. The budgeting is on them. (2) Congress needsto amend the asylum law to allow asylum claims at ports of entry or not at all. That congress has a law disallowing asylum claims at ports of entry is why people are crossing deserts and then surrendering to the first authority they see.

On another side, government budgets are not zero sum. Saying we should spend on X before we spend on Y is also saying you don't think money should go to X. A personal household budget is zero sum, government not so.

> you aren't going to use your power for this Sure you are. If you're, say, running off a gasoline generator, unplug A from it, plug Starlink in, make phone call, unplug Starlink, plug A back in. BTW, nearly everyone in my neighborhood has a generator because the power company fails whenever there's a storm.

In the 30 days after the storm, the last thing we m thinking about is internet. It’s about cleaning up and assessing damage. These people will need communication, but this is like too little. They will be dealing with this for years.

This, the important communication is door to door. Letting distant relatives know you're okay is lower on the priority list. To boot, conventional satellite works fine for that purpose as well.

Two issues though: stores need internet to allow credit cards. The cash only economy in place is painful. Second, lot of folks in Appalachia are poor. I'm told via family in the area that some people wanted to stock up before the storm, but the end of month paycheck was not soon enough.

If you check out the people doing this, they are bringing other things and not just starlinks, generators, fuel, dehumidifiers, etc One of the most interesting ones is Shawn Hendrix on X: https://x.com/TheShawnHendrix While I'm sure having internet isn't their focus, a starlink draws a trivial amount of power especially relative to a dehumidifier/fans/etc and you can only work for so many hours a day. Being able to s…

Cell service is down. Wi-Fi calling/ text/ email may be the only thing working in many cases

Text was working well before voice calls. Had first voice call with family in area just yesterday. Data started working then too. Was texting with them 5 days ago though (sunday). Wifi and email would have needed a generator and satellite link (of one type or another)

> I made reference to exactly this if you read carefully. > Hopefully he’s grown since then Elon Musk has been in the news pretty regularly between the Thai cave rescue and now. I am not sure how someone could have an opinion on the man that has somehow been suspended in time since 2018, but if you’re unaware of what he’s been up to since then here are some updates regarding his personal growth. https://www.vice.com/…

I’m not unaware of his behavior since, but people are complicated, so is ‘growth’, and I try to resist the urge to see only one side of the equation.

This makes sense. “Growth” can be skewed if you only look at a person’s words and actions. The side of the equation that we imagine in our minds has be weighed equally lest we take a combination of a person’s own words about their values and thoroughly documented and uncontested accounts from others as being somehow reflective of a person’s character.

Isn't it also a $300 equipment payment and shipping time to get the equipment is 2 weeks?

I've seen multiple reports that the equipment was in stock and for sale in Home Depot stores in the surrounding area.

Were the home depots accepting credit cards?

Second, poor communities, lots of people had no money to buy pre-storm supplies, let alone pay the equipment cost.

By surrounding areas, are we talking areas people were evacuating to, or within the immense impact area?

My comment has little to do with zero sum, but I’ll assume you’re trying to imply that people in rural NC are going to re-subscribe to their local ISP and keep the promotional ISP, you know, once everything is repaired. But let’s change the story a little: Local ISP has all their infrastructure destroyed, but Comcast’s network is still online. Comcast offers a one-month-free promotion but you have to purchase several…

Starlink is bearing a real cost to service these new users. Yes they could donate more, but that is literally true for every single person providing relief right now.

The practicality is the question. If an effort is going to be useful, it should be useful - and yes,it will have a cost.
