2) Monopolies usually form because of government failure, not because of free markets. What you state is true, but its only true because because its a means to an end: It is substantially easier to manipulate government into currying you favor, than it is to build innovation that sticks. The former is just dollars. The latter is dollars + sweat + luck. 1) OK. I challenge you to find a free market that has produced a…

1) "black market" drugs is pretty close to free-market. But it also gets "help" from the gov; being illegal creates interesting market forces. Also, the players are trying to corner the market in their territory (create a monopoly)

> "black market" drugs is pretty close to free-market

Except for that part about shooting one's competition and rampant fraud.

Lol those aren’t academics, they’re administrators. It’s a pretty simple difference.

Academia is pretty ruthless these days too -- publish or perish.

Totally, but these issues are also completely different.

The article leaves out the fact that PA law doesn't allow paying or otherwise providing any compensation to striking public employees which these grad students are.

Tuition remission isn't pay or compensation. Very explicitly so. Universities even lobbied to maintain this status quo during the TCJA process.

It is according to PA Code 101.6.

The beauty of the free market is that the way to maximize profit is to maximize customer satisfaction.

See also: Insurance, healthcare, and car dealerships, all "free market" institutions that people consistently have great experiences with /s, in case it's non-obvious

The healthcare market has been completely distorted by government interference.

Car dealerships are another market distortion set up, again, by government interference.

Health insurance, too.

Note that customer satisfaction != customer well being (i.e. heroin)

The heroin users believe it is in their best interests.

It's too bad that truly free (i.e. competitive) markets don't survive capitalism for long, due to the inevitable concentration of capital that it produces in the long term.

Wealth is created under free markets, not "concentrated".

Are you in the U.S.? It's law https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/health-plans/cobra

Yes, but that is a separate purchase (that is usually extraordinarily expensive). You don't just get continued coverage.

That's why I had said "... I can sign up for COBRA... "

> Bone headed move. They must have miscalculated if they think the students will cave to this pressure It´s not about caving, I don´t think. It´s about maximum damage. University administration is one of the most ruthless groups you can come across. They´re well aware that they hold the future ambitions of these students in their hands. Even if they get sued, even if they lose, they´re well aware that they can utterl…

The story of Mackenzie Fierceton is a perfect example. These scumbags in university administration could not care less about ruining a student's future. They have nothing to lose.

I concur. The person in the lawsuit Beth winkelstein is an absolute academic bully, eveyone who has ever come across her knows it. It just goes to show how little accountability there is in the University.

Businesses have public relations. This is a bad look.

Given the high cost of tuition, are people really going to want to pay grad students higher salaries? A lot of nice things in life require that someone make a low wage so they are affordable to you.

Yes, I think that tuitions need to come down as well.

> If the profit is basically eliminated, the person can have the high wage, and we can have the nice things. Somehow, however, such Marxist implementations never deliver those nice things.

Co-ops are Marxist? If so, wow, Marxist businesses are remarkably profitable, productive [1], and resilient [2]! [1] https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/worker-cooperative... [2] https://www.uk.coop/sites/default/files/2020-10/co-operative...

If they are so remarkably profitable, why aren't they pervasive?
