The beauty of reddit is that you can create your own subreddit with your own mods and have the discourse that you want. You're not held to just sticking with the subreddits that are given to you.

What the parent is pointing out is that Reddit choosing subreddits for people to subscribe. Sure, I can "create the subreddit with [my] own mods and have the discourse that [I] want". But nobody will see it because everybody is automatically added to the subreddits that Reddit chooses.

GPT-3 is a synthesis of written human culture. Whatever it makes, it comes from us. I see it like a magical mirror into the soul of humanity. When it makes a good story I am very happy because it means I found a path into its deeper levels.

I'm kind of disappointed with the strict training they put on chatGPT, it is always the same canned formula, almost aways uses phrases like "in conclusion" and "however, ...". The stories are all 5-6 phrases and have no details. The original Davinci model from 2 years ago was more creative, but harder to direct.

It shouldn't matter how it's created. But some artists are pissed off that AI can generate art that people like, so they want to ban it. I don't think the average person cares at all.

Some artist are pissed off that the AI can only generate art because it stole the reference pictures they spent countless hours creating.

There is also just a massive amount of bots on reddit. Unidan, a old famous redditor, was involved in a controversy where he would use bots to down vote all the posts made at the same time as his own posts so that his posts would be more visible. He's not the only one doing things like that

Stable Diffusion 2.0 has already made changes to make infringement harder by removing names of artists and celebrities from the dataset, which is probably the right move -- now if you want to emulate e.g. Greg Rutkowski you actually have to figure out how to describe his style in the prompt, teaching you a little about what makes his art special and making it easier to create your own style along the way.

Or get a bunch of Greg Rutkowski paintings and perform textual inversion to get an embedding of his style, which is what people are actually doing, and go back to square 1.

I wonder if/how a hard limit on number of communities moderated would work? Make it so one person could only mod 2-3 subreddits. Unfortunately, this would require some work from Reddit the company to keep those same powermods from just making new accounts so probably won't happen.

I would suggest that they follow the US system of government where users can vote out corrupt or useless moderators via referendum.

Quite. Then I realized that most art has always been cheap (c.f. "starving artist"), so maybe AI doesn't make _that_ much difference in the end?

Why do Reddit moderators do their work? They are paid in power. They get to decide what viewpoints are seen or not by others. That is a very compelling wage. And of course they all think they're doing a service by advancing their ideology because of course their ideology is the right one.

That may be true of the big subreddits. I moderate a small, niche one simply because I was visiting it every day for years and then they needed a mod. I saw it as a chance to improve an online space that I liked.

That's kind of bizarre to me. They act like they're firing employees, and replacing someone for that role, when they're just random volunteers to a community set up by a person unaffiliated with Reddit.

The issue here is stuff like brigading and stuff against the terms of service like straigh out nazism etc. And even those subs stay long often. Brigading is when members of sub coordinate and go to harass people on different sub or mass downvote their posts etc. The subs that have been closed or taken over were notorious for that.

Sounds like the perfect activity for botswarms controlled by a couple guys
