Classic Chinese / Soviet tactic. Every action can be justified because someone else did something bad at some point in time.
Look at it from the other angle. If you are to blame someone for doing XYZ I assume that you are sparkling clean. If however you are doing the same thing simply get lost. You have no moral right to blame someone for doing exactly the same thing you do. It is not "Classic Chinese / Soviet tactic (TM)". It is a friggin natural sense of justice that normal people possess.

The CPC are the ones who dug the deadly hole in the first place. It's great that one of their billionaire members has some money to spare to help people out, but let's not forget they are directly responsible for this pandemic.
Yeah right, they had willfully concocted the virus and diligently sprayed it all around on their streets. It is very convenient blaming your adversaries/competitors for your own f..ups. We could've easily shut the borders at first sign and be protected and safe. Have somebody to blame for that hole?
The CPC knew about this virus for over a month before they took any action to contain it. In fact, they arrested people who were sounding the alarm. Xi is claimed to have been steering the ship for weeks before any lockdowns were put into place in Hubei province. The CPC own this global crisis. If it was not for their epic mismanagement, there would not be a pandemic.

For context, there's a growing number of Chinese diplomats from younger generation who want China to reciprocate the rhetoric of the current US administration. Expect a lot more ridiculous clap backs like this, especially on Twitter where Chinese diplomats have been cultivating a following since HK. This is probably a direct response to folks in US administration using Wuhan/Chinese Virus. Chinese international messa…
You do realize that the MSM and current US administration are completely at odds right? Just by using that term, MSM, would get most people flagged as a Trump supporter. The US drama is mostly internal and has little to do with China.

I really don’t think you understand how government works: the media is run by private industry and doesn’t have power to give the pentagon anything. They also don’t run Gitmo, they don’t fight wars, etc... Yes, the American media isn’t perfect, but deriding it as “fake news” while CCTV a somehow put on a pedestal just seems really wrong. The fact is that it is at least independent of the government and doesn’t have t…
Re-read your Chomsky, and pay attention. You've fallen far behind. You're talking about authoritarians and the "trial-by-drone" guy left office years ago. I haven't mentioned CCTV. It is a pale imitation of the much more distracting Western news business. We are endlessly terrorized about bullshit, yet somehow nothing I mentioned above was even covered. They don't focus on the vast areas of agreement between the two…
China is played in western media because that is the perception that their audiences want to see. It isn’t universally negative either, it just is what it is. Media reports negative stories about everyone (not just China), because negative news sells more than positive news and unlike CCTV, they have to pay the bills.

Again, sorry, but I have developed a low tolerance for the nonsense that going around out there with regards to COVID-19. Nobody seems interested (or able to) fire-up a spreadsheet and do some math. If you have half a million people using shit masks and shit tests we will overwhelm our medical facilities. Do you have ANY idea what's going on in Italy right now. It's so sad. Doctors are having to choose who they let d…
> Sorry, we don't need more Chinese shit. The virus was enough. Xenophobia is not okay.
Where did the virus come from? China.
Where does "Chinese shit" come from? China.
I didn't say "French shit" or "Swiss shit". I said "Chinese shit". Which, I don't know, I think that, by definition, comes from CHINA.
Wow, so "Chinese shit" isn't made in China then? It must be made in Australia and we call it "Chinese shit" 'cause we like the Aussies? Brilliant. But, even though it is made in Australia, if you call it "Chinese shit" you are xenophobic. Heavy stuff dude.
Or are you going to tell me that when you buy a piece of crap product on Amazon it is far more likely to come from France, Germany, the UK, Switzerland than China?
C'mon. Stop using insults to stomp down reality.
People who say stuff like that have never even tried to manufacture anything in China. Some of us have DECADES of experience with China and know very well where things can lead without oversight.
What, nobody remembers the TOYS PAINTED WITH LEAD PAINT?!!!
Or, how about the DOG FOOD FROM CHINA THAT WAS CONTAMINATED????
Are you f-ing kidding me? There's a list like that miles long.
Get real.
Hey, if you have EVIDENCE the virus came from somewhere else, say, the moon or mars, I'm all ears. I'm sure lots of people would like to see that evidence.
If you have EVIDENCE that "Chinese shit" like iPhone chargers that burn down your house, toys painted with lead paint, contaminated dog food, etc. do not come from China, again, I am sure many people would be interested in your amazing investigative research.
Until then...stop using words you obviously don't know how to apply.

At least I am not ignorant, or naive. That's dangerous.
You are ignorant because you assume US tests and masks are vastly superior to Chinese tests and masks for this application. Masks, even perfect ones barely do anything for something that infectious and tests are more for statistics to inform high level decision making than anything else. Staying away from people is the only thing that measurably does anything.
Nope. That is not what I said at all. Not even close.
Stop making up stuff that someone never said.
What I said, very clearly, is that the difference is in TRACEABILITY and, not directly but implied, adherence to REAL SPECIFICATIONS, PERFORMANCE AND QUALITY.
The Chinese are FAMOUS for taking shortcuts, faking regulatory testing, ignoring safety in designs, having contaminated and less-than-ideal work and manufacturing environments, etc.
The only way you make things in China and don't get shafted in a big way is if you supervise the heck out of them. Yes, there are large reputable manufacturers, and most of them are the result of years of this kind of supervision and process improvement by the likes of Apple. Sadly, unless you operating at that scale, most companies making product in China do not necessarily have the same assurances an Apple, HP or might have.
In fact, the quality problem is so serious that there's a whole industry of factory inspection companies who's job is to go to the factory making your product to inspect the product you ordered before it ships. Let me say that again, you hire outside inspectors to go into the factory and inspect and test your product before it ships in order to ensure you don't get shafted.
Think about that for a moment. In the US and Europe it is UNTHINKABLE to have to hire a third party to go and inspect product we produce. We provide specifications and test criteria and then expect and trust our contract manufacturer will deliver what we ordered. In China you do that at your peril.
The people who are reacting negatively to my comments are doing so while completely devoid of experience and an understanding of the realities in China. You can't know this by buying an iPhone and sitting behind your screen reading HN. Those who know and understand China know exactly what I am talking about. Are there great factories and contract manufacturers in China? Absolutely! Do you still have to go there and supervise the work? Absolutely!
So, please, pretty please, don't call someone ignorant when you don't really understand what you are talking about. I am just sick of this culture where insults are a replacement for taking the time to learn something and understand.
> Masks, even perfect ones barely do anything for something that infectious and tests are more for statistics to inform high level decision making than anything else.
Irrelevant nonsense.
> Staying away from people is the only thing that measurably does anything.
No. So does washing your hands, not touching your face, cleaning/disinfecting the work environment, etc. It isn't the "only" thing, it's one of many things.
And yet, it is completely irrelevant and has nothing to do with my proposal that, at the end of the day, a bunch of free masks and kits with no traceability and quality control are a terrible idea and not a gift we should accept or use in any way.
Here's a hypothetical scenario for you:
You have two rooms. Each with 24 people. All of them have absolutely confirmed COVID-19 infection. You are allowed to wear gloves and a mask. Your job is to check their vital signs and do a general checkup. You have to touch them. You have to interact with them. You have to get close to them. You might have to take their masks off for some tests.
You get to choose from two options:
Room 1: Everyone, including yourself, is wearing US-made masks made by 3M that are traceable and are tested to be within 3M and government specifications.
Room 2: Everyone, including yourself, is wearing Chinese-made masks given as gifts by some dude. We have not traceability information and they say they were tested according to US standards but nobody can tell us where they were made (which factory), who tested them and who supervised and confirmed the testing and manufacturing.
Which room do you go into?
Right.

Well. Not so fast. It isn't cynicism to point out issues with this idea. You can't accept half a million random tests kits and use them for anything. It isn't that simple. At a minimum, we know nothing about where they came from, their traceability, method of manufacture, sterility, etc. And then there's the reality that "test kits" does not mean swab-to-result technology. There's a lot more to testing someone for, w…
Given the choice between a Chinese mask that perhaps didn't meet some specification (but probably does) and, no mask which is better I wonder?
Let's say these masks are going to protect our doctors. The risk is that garbage masks might not protect them at all. Very soon we lose an entire hospital because we used product without traceable and verified specifications and performance. How many patients die because that one hospital is now shuttered?
If, on the other hand, these masks are being used while cutting wood on a table saw to keep from inhaling sawdust, well, specifications can be very loose and it will still protect you.
When things matter, adherence to standards, honest testing, traceable quality and specifications matters.

If, on the other hand, these masks are being used while cutting wood on a table saw to keep from inhaling sawdust, well, specifications can be very loose and it will still protect the wearer just fine.
When things matter, adherence to specifications and standards while backed to real and traceable testing matters.
What is ignorant is to not take the time to think, understand and become knowledgeable enough to have an opinion rooted in facts. Please stop using insults in place of doing your homework.

#240The guy is either a complete idiot [1] or pretends to be one. I wouldn't over-analyze his actions too much. [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHGd6LqAVzw
He didn't believe AI could be smarter than the smartest human (IIRC).
It's a different point of view.
You can disagree. But calling him an idiot makes you an asshole, tbh.
The interview was cringey as fuck because of his English skill. He couldn't deliver a joke properly like the joke about Alibaba Intelligence. Musk also didn't handle the joke well (not his fault.. he isn't a professional MC).
