The article is about Bluesky, but what I find hard to believe is that Threads has almost twice the MAU compared to X?.. I’ve never met a person that uses Threads in any capacity. Never even heard anyone mention about anything on Threads. Are these numbers skewed somehow?

X was popular but never had that many users, not even back in the Twitter days. This is a big part of why Twitter was so easily acquired.

I’ve come to think there’s no “better” social media. People just seem to leave social media entirely.

The numbers seem to support the premise that people are leaving text-based social media.

TikTok and YouTube are still growing, while Reddit, Facebook, X and the rest are stagnant or shrinking

In terms of politics, yes. It's a bit like the worst of reddit. Nobody reads the article, everybody gets outraged in the same cliché way. If you try to provide nuance you get derided or blocked. (Blocking seems to be held in high esteem, which I think is also part of the problem.)

Building a social network with people in love with shared blocking lists is not a great recipe.

A little OT but I recall Marc Andreessen went on a blocking spree on Twitter when it was still Twitter. He would block people and then tweet about it.

I'd expect it to be cross-pollination from Instagram being tied to Threads

I suspect Meta just counts every Instagram user as a Threads user

I agree (in a way), but I don't think that people who went to Bluesky were trying to recreate twitter, they were trying to silence twitter. The past they are pining for was a past when people they didn't like weren't allowed to speak, and they were hoping (in a non-userlike, political way) that bluesky would threaten twitter, and force it to behave in the way that they preferred or to shut down. Then they would all b…

I feel like some folks who don’t use Bluesky, evidently yourself included, have this very distinct notion of what a Bluesky user is. All I can tell you is it doesn’t match at all with the experience I have on the service. You are projecting a lot on this imaginary Bluesky user. You’ve crafted an entire narrative in your head about how egotistical they were and how crushed they are at Twitter still being around. I don…

My friend on Bluesky openly said he wanted Twitter gone; he was hoping it’d be gone by this year. He’s also a big fan of reporting people on the app.

I understand the need for a clean, non-toxic space but I’m mildly surprised you’re denying him and others existence. Ironically, it feeds into that “silence” narrative the GP suggested.
