It’s worse than this. A company offering “private” smart glasses could slip into FB mode on its own or get acquired. So it’s a hard no from any company really.

I'm thinking of it more like the Raspberry Pi of smart glasses.

Something with open-ish hardware running Linux without any specific blocks on installing your own software on it.

They just... don't stop. What're you gonna do, take away the camera, hit them? Then they have great content and can sue you for assault. There's millions of people out there that are filming without consent every single day, for content.

A lot of people have done this, because at that point it's consciously making a decision to be an asshole and violating someone's privacy. The laws may not be on the side of the guy who hits the TikToker - and that's what they capitalize on, but morally, the guy throwing the punch would be in the right. It also depends on where you live, I guess. TikTokers don't normally do such stuff in Asia because you can go to the cops and file assault, but when they find out you were being the douche, they will not take any action.

There are glasses that do only captions, no recording or camera. The article says "any eyewear with video and audio recording capability" which makes sense. Although even that is unreasonably specific and should just say "recording or transmission device" to ban the activity and not the item.

Pretty sure any device which subtitles audio could be used to record that audio.

Which is not the problem when the device has no interface to get the data out and no storage media to store it.

The vibe around smart glasses is so weird: Governments and businesses can record in public, which is right and proper, but if an individual person records what they see, that's wrong and creepy.

Imagine all those video feeds and then you start to see the patterns especially with AI. Oh my god, they don't want to see those patterns emerging.
