That’s a huge leap. I never claimed that anyone was safe. I just think your assertions have no basis or citations and you’re posting them from a throwaway. This is the equivalent of writing something on a bathroom stall.

Of course I post on a throwaway. HN is full of idiots who downvote cos it goes against what they believe in.

Fact is Facebook has been advertising using user data on messenger and WhatsApp. Some believe it’s not possible and some theorise that they analysis the message on the device and send metadata over.

But it doesn’t change the fact Facebook is in control of the whole pipeline.

My ideas are fleshed out just fine, you are being needlessly pedantic. Noone needs to enumerate every contingency to agree with a law passing or being enforced. You live in a fantasy world.

Yes details matter. And you don’t pass a law without thinking through those things - the obvious one is that you would have to block sites outside of the US that don’t follow the law

You should have started with that, and added some sources (based on reversing, there are many out there). There’s a good claim to be made that even if they don’t use their app to wholesale decrypt chats locally, they do use metadata. Its likely they can’t do a good job of moderating without it.

I find out interesting that the discussion on HN is narrowly focused on the technical/messaging accesss angle, rather than on the anticompetitive collusion. The collusion is the "big picture" root cause of so many downstream evils.

My solution is to not use online products.

I have a Gmail account because everyone needs email these days, and an iPhone with Gmail and banking and little else “online”

Sorry not sorry tech people but I never really asked to be born or have your existence specifically but on me specifically.

You’re society’s problem, not mine. It can deal with it without knowing I exist.

Yeah, one of the “ends” being Facebook itself. It's “legal” as in it is indeed end-to-end encrypted in the same way Cloudflare-hosted websites are, but very shitty. I always thought Facebook did this, but having some confirmation bias is very nice indeed, lol.
