I like that the corporate bullshit just keeps getting more. Google’s “don’t be evil” is many steps down from openai having open in their name. They should be called Open AI with ( not open) in small print. I argue a lot over “open source” software with non-OSI license and sometimes worry if I’m too pedantic. But I think it’s important to use terms accurately and not to confuse reality more than it already is by calli…

Source? My understanding was this came from within and had nothing to do with products but instead how employees treated one another.

This is the loophole. It's what Mozilla did (Foundation created Corporation, and moved employees there), and even IKEA is technically owned by a nonprofit (Stichting INGKA Foundation).

The IKEA situation is far more complicated, exploiting gaps in how the laws of several different countries interact.

Nice grift by Sam Altman taking all the donations and good will a non profit gets just to flip 180. He probably would have done the same with his crypto scam startup worldcoin if it would not have failed in every way before he could scam.

I don't see the problem. he's making some quite valid criticisms of OpenAI. Jesus himself could be in charge of policy work there and that wouldn't change the fact that "Open"AI is anything but open

Two disparate thoughts.

if they were two disparate thoughts why did you put them next to each other with no indication of the disparity? and why do the two things have clear impact on each other?

Yuuup. And just like with Facebook, real power ( information ) in the form of ingested data and prompts will be available to people like Altman, Thiel and Musk, while everyone is gushing over being able to build a simple website automatically ( which is arguably cool ). I wish I could trust FB to deliver on their promises, but this community's only hope is to ensure an open source version of gpt exists. edit: To the…

>I wish I could trust FB to deliver on their promises, but this community's only hope is to ensure an open source version of gpt exists. This is the worrisome part of it all. It's no longer programmer sweat and toil that creates the value, but raw compute, which has a fixed capital cost that cannot be surmounted by skill or dedication. I don't see how, short of massive crowdfunding, open source can possibly release a…

Hmm. Crowdfunding avenues exist. What is missing is trust ( also undermined by OpenAI ). I am trying to think who I would believe to have the knowledge, skill, PR skills ( or at least name recognition ) and ethics necessary to pull it off and I am drawing a blank. I am admittedly merely an interested party, but it does not bode well since the rest of the public knows or cares even less.

Tim Ferriss interview with him. It came from within, maybe I didn't explain myself clearly.

Step by step, ever since the calling the diver a "pedo", every since the "funding secured" i've began to realise just how petty and pathetic elon is. Every opportunity he has he seems to show just how vindictive he really is. Man child who now has way too much money. Buying Twitter on a whim is the latest in a string of decisions which do not align with the "let's get to Mars and save earths environment" stuff he lik…

He's lost himself in the fake popularity of being a social media celebrity. He started believing that having 100 million followers on a web site really means that a continent's worth of people adore you. For all his complaints about bots after he got cold feet on the Twitter purchase, he seems strangely naïve about how social media really works and what's real there. “This is ridiculous,” he said, according to multip…

That seems to happen to almost all people who are popular on social media and Youtube. They have millions of loyal followers and it really gets to their head. The same happened to Jordan Peterson. He used to have good insights on psychology but lately he seems to believe he has perfect wisdom on everything and he has tons of people who tell him that.

As far as Musk goes, for me the breaking point was the Thai cave situation where he tried (and succeeded) to suck up attention with their submarine prototype although nobody working on it knew anything about cave diving. Sheer arrogance and attention seeking.

I don't think they impact each other, I thought it was weird elon was taking random swipes at openai, but when I searched his Twitter for openai, the collection of tweets made it clear, interestingly for the same reason the article states (I tend to agree with Elon and the article).

In other news, imo, if a startup doing society altering work per the article is going to be closed, at least, imo, the people working there are decent people.
