w3.org redirect to www.w3.org, but not HTTPS. This makes sense for the standards org that defines HTTP, and needs to maintain backwards compatibility.

Your $5 instance with cPanel management isn't really quite the same as someone manually managing 100 servers hosting these services on disparate configurations and environments. In other words, what your tooling of choice automates in a specific situation doesn't necessarily apply to any one else's usage, and scalability-wise, would be even more detached.
Certbot works with multiple configurations and servers / Operating Systems: https://certbot.eff.org/ I wouldn't be surprised if that's how he's managing 100 servers, or something similar.

Having the DNS credentials laying around on the server is not a good idea. So creating wildcard certs via letsencrypt is a huge pain in the ass. AWS certificates are free. Cloudflare will also put SSL in front of your origin for free. So if you’re using AWS you get it for free. Or you can slap CloudFront or Cloudflare in front of your origin. I think the barrier is low enough that I SSL all the things (including my small side projects).
"Free", but you can only use them on AWS stuff. AWS makes it nice and easy (and does a bunch behind the scenes for you). Part of that behind-the-scenes is that they have control of the private key on their side. You want to use the AWS generated cert locally, or on another provider, too bad.

Can you use old crypto for IE6 using some kind of agent detection while using new crypto for modern browsers? I thought Cloudflare does something like that. But there's a danger of MITM downgrade attack with this approach...
If you don't do this to get SHA-1 then you're relying on the users somehow having applied enough updates to not need SHA-1 but for some reason insisting on IE6 anyway. That's a narrower set of users. At some point you have to cut your losses.

I find LetsEncrypt to be a hassle. About 1/3 of the time the auto-renew doesn't renew because some python dependency changed, etc.

#230I mostly have port 80 egress traffic blocked on Little Snitch. The web is painful to use like that but gives you an idea of the sorry state of websites. A lot of websites just don't serve over HTTPS, or serve them with domains whose CN or SAN don't match the host. Many that do support https have links that downgrade you back to http on the same domain.
How do you use public Wi-Fi with captive portals?
If nothing else works, temporarily disabling the firewall is a couple clicks away, barely takes any time or effort at all.
I don't know why people are making such a fuss out of this.
