I have my instance set up to enable/disable evil via a keybinding. That way, the edge cases can be handled smoothly. There is also a way to configure evil so that emacs keybindings work while in Insert mode, but not in Normal or Visual mode, if that matters at all.

Ctrl-z is the default keybinding to temporarily disable evil-mode; there's no need for a separate keybinding.

The pointer represents your (pointer) finger. Single-finger motions affect the pointer. Scrolling motions affect a representation of the document. When I move my (real) finger up, my (real) finger moves up. When I put my (real) finger on a (real) document and move it up, the paper of the document moves up, causing new text from the bottom to appear in my field of view.

Or scrolling represents a viewpoint, such as a frame, or a finger pointing at the document. Then it's the other way round again. You can't just declare what the metaphor is, it's arbitrary.

Which is not natural. The manipulation of a trackpad matches the manipulation of a document, natural.

There's no real world concept of a 'viewport' that makes sense with documents other than our own eyes; we don't move our eyes with our hands, unnatural.
