When patients are treated as consumers we'll see the wave of economic incentives. Value based care as part of the ACA is headed in the right direction.
As a physician and subspecialist I have invested 24+ years of education to achieve this title. Its degrading to our profession and patients to refer to us doctors as 'providers' and to patients as 'consumers'.
This takeover of healthcare by MBA-speak is one of the most irksome trends, and rebranding patients as "consumers" is a patently false equivalence.

Obviously this cannot replace all menus but hey, it's a start.
