not a very good list, from a historical perspective it’s missing many important cards, as mentioned by others also, the gpu did not exist until 1999 looks like this was created for engagement

GPUs existed in the 1960s, but apparently Sony invented the actual term "GPU" in 1994.

Compute stopped behaving like a consumer good and started behaving like an infrastructure; the prices went from competitive cycles to higher while the performance kept compounding and that’s usually what happens when something becomes a bottleneck for entire industries and not just for end users so the gap between what people use and what’s at the frontier says it all.

I don't believe this list was curated as the title suggests. It's just a semi-random list of popular-ish GPUs with LLM-generated descriptions. The site looks nice, which fools us into thinking thought and effort was put into this.

It does start with the Voodoo, so I got what I came for.

They do which is fine.

Where's my Matrox?

Matrox Mystique was a combination 2D/3D consumer card, which at the time, was still something that mattered. Sure a Voodoo addon card mattered more, very soon, but then quickly things shifted back to combination 2D/3D card with Nvidia!

Also, how is a "first $2000 consumer card" something that "matters"? That's precisely the kind of thing that doesn't matter. My entire laptop cost less than that and I play games with it. What matters much more is that I can play quite a bunch of games that are even pretty recent with a laptop that cost less than that, all with an integrated graphics chip from a company that is precisely known for having abysmal 3D performance: Intel (I have an Iris Xe)

This is a wonderful-looking infographic, but I truly don't think there are 49 GPUs that mattered in the PC gaming hardware space - let alone all of computer graphics. Call it recency bias, but after the Pascal cards it feels like maybe one or two more entrants actually mattered?

Pascal is already too late to matter (2016) IMHO. With the release of D3D9 in 2002, GPUs of different vendors didn't really stand out anymore since they all implemented the same feature set anyway (and that's a good thing).

Kind of, because they still had different kinds of limitations, and that played a role in what is available to shaders ever since.

Just like nowadays not all mesh shaders, compute, ray tracing or DirectStorage are born alike across all vendors.

Usually one can expect that an Intel GPU will never deliver as much as one AMD or let alone NVidia one.

Naturally this is us focusing on the PC space, if taking mobile, game consoles, or Apple ecosystem, then there are many other factors.

Considering they list multiple version of the same generation of card, like the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080TI. This list is just a list of popular cards over the last 30 years

I have a strong feeling that this website was designed by Claude Code using the /frontend-design skill.

Ok? Not bad to be able to throw something like that together with minimal effort. Works nicely enough.

It's pretty, but almost exclusively focused on ATI/AMD and Nvidia with an intel thrown in for fun. Not actually a list of important GPUs.

Should have started with ANTIC - the very first programmable video chip I'm aware of...

It's probably just me being out of touch, but I don't think the GeForce RTX 4000 or 5000 series really mattered/matters that much. At the same time I'd add the S3 ViRGE and the Matrox G200. Both mattered a lot at the time, but not long term.

> RTX 4000 and 5000

These GPUs have made DLSS and frame generation usable technologies, getting you reasonable 4k gaming on a budget.

It’s not perfect yet, but almost all new games support it and despite the widespread complaints, very few people actually disable these features.

Dystopian future where AI pumps out slop and uses human feedback and comments to correct the output.

Isn’t this a bit like spell-checking a Nigerian Prince email? The valuable eyeballs are the ones that don’t notice or don’t care.

Sure, If ranking is done purely based on clicks and not quality. I'm just thinking of it as a meta "loss" function in the AI context. So I'd say its the passionate enthusiasts who care enough to provide feedback on such topics.
