How does whatsapp make money? (At all, and how much?) It's not possible it makes as much as the main Meta properties. It has no ads on anything people use.
They have a business api and take a cut of transaction fees on whatsapp pay. And they obviously cross-reference the data with Instagram/FB to sell you stuff.

I think that most of the traffic being stolen away is going to be for low value searches. I (and probably almost everyone else) use Google when I already know what I want, ie I’m trying to get to a company’s website to buy a particular thing, but don’t know their url name. I’m not going to use an LLM to shop for car insurance or look for hotels.

I use it less for information based searches, but that almost seems to be a win from an advertiser perspective.
