#202Can someone very briefly wrap this whole "SF is broken"-situation up for somebody from Europe? I only ever read that it's "because of the policies" and there are lots of rather disturbing videos about SF making its rounds on YouTube. But what exactly happened? Did they just remove all the police? Did they gave out free drugs to everybody? I'm not interested in blaming political parties, I just want to get a quick gra…
Why are there so many people on unlicensed dirt bikes doing wheelies down the street?

SF homicide rate is close to the national average.
I remember in the 90's that oakland and east palo alto were basically murder capitals, and SF wasn't too far off.

#204Nothing will change. I was attacked in Christmas ‘21 in the Tenderloin, right after walking out of the KFC/Taco Bell on Eddy. Two cop cars drove by me and did nothing. It was only due to an ambulance finishing a run at Sutter and spotting me that I didn’t bleed out on the suitcase. I have video, proof of damages physical and financial, eyewitnesses and the info of the men who attacked me. SFPD will not arrest them be…
Yep same here. Estonia is a dream compared to Bay Area even with the cold winters and old Soviet buildings (which means lots of cheap rent btw). San Francisco has a powerful marketing and promotion engine - and yes it really is a gorgeous city in the late summer - but the weather otherwise is pretty miserable - almost as cold and rainy as Seattle I'm sure - given the option - any US west coast tech startup would much…

#205I find it shocking that anyone still chooses to live in this broken city. I left >4 years ago and am never coming back. It's unfixable. Let's move the tech industry somewhere that isn't rotten to the core.
It was bad then and pandemic made it worse.
So many closed shops on Market St/Union Square area.
Walk a few blocks West and Tenderloin looks like doomsday. Lines for soup kitchens, tents, drugged-up and mentally-ill people walking like Zombies.

1. Due to the temperate weather, California has largely become the dumping ground for America's chronic homeless. This is rooted in longstanding housing policies causing a shortfall of affordable housing nationwide. 2. On top of that, California has additional broken tax policies and other policies that deepen the shortage of affordable housing. 3. Big cities are where the services are, such as soup kitchens. If you…
...Or, being LGBTQ puts you in a higher risk of being homeless due to underlying mental issues. We can never know.

The rich can usually avoid the stench and filth of the poor so they don't invest their money in solving it. Now the poorness is festering.
This is a problem that will not get solved without taxes, and it probably won't get solved without taxes at the federal level. Americans will not let themselves be taxed more and so the consequences are more of this for the foreseeable future.
