Every UI change has negative feedback to some degree because a part of the user base just doesn't like change. Overall FF is just as usable as the decade before in my opinion. I just had the same question and looked into it. The answer is no you can't, they removed the ability to disable Proton as of version 91. I also strongly dislike the new tabs as they're totally disconnected from the actual pages they're a tab for with whitespace, less contrast as you mention as well which an issue if you don't have great eyesight. This has made me genuinely very irritated. They take up so much space now! Why the f- do Mozilla insist upon making these fundamental but completely pointless changes? I have this software staring me in the face ALL the time, I don't need tab functionality being so large and distinct.

I've not been bothered by a lot of UI changes as each update has allowed them to be reverted quite easily.

It seems that every update has me swearing for 15 minutes until someone on HN helpfully points to a solution, but not this time. GRR.

Google, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, etc pushing their browsers through their platforms would be the main reason. Most people don't care about the UI changes. Yes it was a little jarring at first. Most people don't care about the specific UI changes. But they feel frustrated and helpless when they have to relearn what they knew suddenly with no benefit to them. Things like lower contrast aren't just about taste or getting used to it.

The lower contrast is definitely an issue.

I've also done a turnabout and switched over to compact / Lepton. So go figure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I still don't get why they decided to get rid of compact.

Come join us over here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1704347 I can't distinguish the current tab anymore as well if lighting conditions are less than perfect or if I sit at an angle from the screen. Or here, same issue, 19 years ago https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173667 (I get that things change, I just thought it was funny)

Thank you so much for posting this. This makes Firefox usable again for me. Not sure what they were thinking with these floating tabs.

Never managed to get TST to run well on my machines. But no need to fret, found this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sidebery/ It combines a vertical tab bar with grouping and containers and more.

I just switched from TST to sidebery. I would have preferred to stay with TST, but the ability to switch between different trees is a killer feature.

Debian is on Firefox 78, which is an official long-term support version (Extended Support Release in Mozilla-speak). The point of those LTS versions is exactly to only contain critical bug fixes and no other changes.

Debian stable you mean. I am talking about unstable.

https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/firefox says that Debian Unstable should have version 90 as of last month. If you're not getting updates, perhaps the mirror you're using is stale?

https://packages.debian.org/sid/firefox disagrees however. Your link is about the source package.

I use the Window Titler extension to give my windows names and the Tab Mover extension to move tabs between windows.

This way I name windows after a project and as needed I'll move a tab there if I happen to open it in the wrong window.

As a tab hoarder this has really enhanced my organization and ability to find things again.

Aren't the firefox upgrades largely in-browser now? I haven't seen firefox even upgraded in the repos but two clicks in Firefox' menu got me the last version.

I am not aware of any distribution that does not disable the in-firefox updates.
