Folks here are discussing the difference between AR and VR. My own take is that it's a difference of implementation. Quality VR with quality external cameras is going to give you a MUCH better experience than would AR glasses, and can of course do many things that VR glasses could not. I do think that AR glasses are much more practical and will have broader applicability. But perhaps not so much after a great VR impl…

VR is fail-deadly, AR is fail-safe by design and there's no way of getting around that. When VR fails, it's a black screen covering your head, whereas AR is the world around you. There are many circumstances where AR is far better than VR, even with perfect VR

AR is also much, much harder. Refresh rate doesn't just have to fool your brain, it needs to "stick" to reality. Plus, you're adding environment tracking and integration. If you're using a glasses model, the only techniques I've heard of darken the environment and the CG element lightens things--this makes integration difficult.

I imagine you could use some tricks if you did AR with cameras pointing out and displayed them on a screen (this seems to be what the parent is implying), but you go back to "failure" being a black screen. In practice, I haven't seen this be a big deal. The display is black when it is off (like your phone assuming it doesn't put the screen to sleep). If any rendering misses a frame they distort the previous frame in the buffer to match any head movements (in AR likely reintegrate with new footage).

Bear in mind that the iPad was rumored to cost >$1000 but then launched at $499. On the other hand it might sense to launch this as a pro-workstation for the usual kinds of task: architects, designers and engineers being able to visualize and interact with models directly in space. If they can make that affordable and usable for pro designers at every level, (which $3500 clearly would be), they will have a hit. A con…

There's no way a Mac could render at that resolution when we have 600 dollar 2k headsets severely stressing top of the line gpus.

The article mentions rendering only the fovea in high resolution. The key advantage is it does not need to render all 33Mpx equally well.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

So moving your head a lot? You would look like a giant weirdo, right?

People 50 years ago would have said that about people who aimlessly slide their thumb up and down a glass screen on a device the size of a deck of cards.

50 years ago people were busy staring at slices of dead trees while experiencing detailed hallucinations.

Having done a fair bit of AR/VR work in medical and industrial settings, I've always thought the 'killer app' of VR is not in gaming.

It's this very weekend: The Super Bowl.

Well, not the Super Bowl precisely, but in experiences like sports or other time/space limited events. Sitting ring-side for the next big match. Or at the 50-yard line at the Super Bowl. Or at the finish line of the 100-m dash. All for, I dunno, $15? And the cost for the company is just rigging a google-maps-like camera ball and streaming the data out. Especially as the quarantine grinds onwards, a better form of escapism that AR/VR provides may have a big market for time/space limited events.

The #1 use of VR headsets is porn and porn apps are growing. Porn apps have some advantages over video apps because * a VR porn app is 6DOF, VR video is 3DOF * a VR porn character has more presence. Their eyes can follow you, they can turn to face you, they can reach to your face, hands. * You can interact at a VR character. You can't with a video In other words, either Apple is going to need to support porn apps on…

What's the source on this? I see people keep saying that but from what I've seen, the #1 use of VR is as a gaming console, with a focus on games that embrace the fitness aspect of VR. The Quest 2 has an insane mainstream potential, too, and most people won't bother rooting it. Speaking of, I'm going back to beat saber. You might have been misled by its name if you think that's a porn app. :) Email's in my profile if…

> What's the source on this?

Based on the GP's username it's probably from a self-survey.

Microsoft’s hololens2 is $3.5k available now for developers.

We've had ours on back order for 18 months and counting. It is technically out there, but hard to get for companies.

In the context of the rest of this comment, and the one you're referring to, I wonder how many people assume 'Beat Saber' is a euphemism.

Why would it have too be a pornapp in App Store? Apple allows movie players which play any movies of the right data format (mp4, etc). Why not a VR player with data files obtained elsewhere? The game consoles already have VR playing capability for VR formatted data files (e.g. Wipeout on PS4). As long as a book is either pdf or epub it can be trivially read regardless of content. I don't see an issue here.
