Labor force participation rate. It says in the article.

Sure, but how is that measured and what does it exclude?

participation rate = (employed + actively seeking work population) / (non-prison population of age 16-64)

I thought that government benefits in the US were shite? I can understand why European men might opt-out but I thought that you were basically dooming yourself to homelessness without a job in America. How are these men living?

> How are these men living?

Likely with family or friends. Unemployment payment isn't too great and it is temporary- so it doesn't go far

I am trying to figure out when people will realize that a society without healthy men taking charge and pushing forward is a dying society. It's even more obvious when we see other countries whose feminization of men has actually led to the decline of their population. Reading the sterile, cerebral responses here is a bit disconcerting, but expected given the participating audience, because "smart" people assume that…

Have you ever seen any examples of societies becoming less over-governed? Typically the government gets bigger and worse until it collapses and then that society has to start over. I worry collapse might be the only way progress is made.

I don't think people will care until the issue has become large enough that it will start impacting others in society indirectly. Eg not enough tax revenue being generated or not enough men willing to fight in a war.

I would wager that a lot of the people wasting time playing video games all day are precisely the ones who would benefit most from serving in the armed forces. Traditionally that is probably where a lot of them would have ended up.

As cannon fodder to protect the privileged.

I'm going to say something crazy, and it's cool if you disagree if you don't call me names or kick me in the shin. Pay people to go to school. At least for a while. Why not?

“Why not” ideas seem hard to sell to governments populated by agents finding hard to allocate resources to their own preferred causes.

While I think you make some fair points, did you really need to be so adversarial and self-righteous? I wonder to what extent such a delivery neuters productive discussion.

Ah, you inadvertently hit the crux of the issue with your question. You see, diplomacy is a tool for maintaining the peaceful status quo. It is a tool for conflict resolution with little variability in the outcome. Countries build nuclear weapons so they may level the playing field, in order for diplomacy to be an effective tool. Otherwise, you will be stepped on. The sophisticated, well-spoken man is he who already…

Again, while I agree with some of your thinking, I'd also invite you to consider that your passion blinds you from seeing any perspective besides your own. It's not that your ideas are wrong - nor that they're right - it's that you're so unequivocally certain they're right.

This level of self-righteousness, which you seem not only to possess but also flaunt, is - as you mention - an excellent antidote to "extreme diplomacy."

You don't need to listen to others - after all, it's too diplomatic. You can build an empire all by yourself, the greatest expression of the overman's will to power. But, it is an empire of one.

As it happens, we don't live in societies of one. As it happens, there seems to be diplomacy and agreement everywhere. What does that suggest about a long-run optimal strategy for civilizations? Should we really be plunging into internecine war just because "extreme diplomacy" represents a slave morality once again repressing the "passion" of the great man, the overman?

No, it likely suggests that unfettered self-righteousness is perhaps short-run optimal, long-run suboptimal. Refusing to listen to others - to be diplomatic - works when you can do everything yourself. And the moment you end up needing something from others, it turns out they've shut you out of the long-term, iterated game. They don't want to play with you anymore. Why? Because you can't empathize, you can't listen, you can't yield.

I understand why being diplomatic is threatening. After all, it limits one's self-expression! It challenges the triumph of the individual! The overman!

But unless you want to occupy a society of one, that's simply what building a group, a community, or a society requires: diplomacy, politics, persuasion and agreement.

I don't think the two causes listed in the article are actually the causes. I think both are yet another symptom of an underlying problem. I would argue that men doing worse in schooling is likely another symptom of the same issue. I think that the heart of the issue is that more men nowadays feel that they just don't matter. Not to society nor to anyone else. This leads to a situation where they will simply sacrific…

> I think that the heart of the issue is that more men nowadays feel that they just don't matter. Isn't everyone feeling this? Maybe men are feeling the ways that others have felt for a long time? I agree that the loss of privilege is definitely happening, which is honestly a good thing imo, but I'd tie this back to greater cultural unease about one's economic future more than anything else. Most of the folks I know…

> but I'd tie this back to greater cultural unease about one's economic future more than anything else. Most of the folks I know are in their 30s and don't believe they'll ever retire.

>If the system is squeezing every ounce of your labor out and you're only seeing a small return on it, what's keeping you motivated?

But by any metric you choose these things were worse in the past. We didn't have safety nets for the elderly. You worked in a factory and not only were the wages bad but the work was dangerous. I don't see how these variables explain the problem now since they had a worse value in the past.

The article is long on detail and short on suggestions (which is understandable). However, the suggestions it does make are not obviously going to work. The men illustrated in the article do not seem incapable of work, but rather disinterested. Vocational training isn't going to fix the fact that the government benefits the article cited allows the men to stay at home playing video games all day. Most people (but esp…

"Most people (but especially men, given the propensity of the male psyche to become dependent on dopamine) would rather take the short term thrill of continuous dopamine"

Please don't spread misinformation. Take an study like Sex differences in addiction (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5286725/). If anything the propensity of the female psyche is more likely to become dependent on dopamine, but its an effect that only impact around 10-16% of the population.

> the main impetus for men to seek status of any kind is to impress women and provide a legacy for families.

Games provide an readily accessed environment for status competition among men. Women also gained a similar environment, called social networks. In both environments the objective is less about impressing the opposite sex and more about dominating the same sex. Unsurprisingly, if we look at what young men and young women spend their free time we see similar mount of excess from men choosing to play video games and women play the social network game.

With women reaching equality in the work force it seems that men are also moving closer to equality in free time, especially at younger ages.

All this could be plausible, however in other countries many of the same factors are present, including government benefits, yet male labor force participation rates are higher.

Brah. Most jobs are hot garbage right now and video games at least give you tangible goals and rewards. You don't have to be some Uber man to be happy in life, and even if you are super masculine you still will choose the path that feels best. If for whatever reason you're stuck in a place where you have to put in years of effort for a small chance that you might have a better life vs taking a non ideal but still acc…

You're partly right. I work for myself, I fucking love my work, I'm a proper hacker, actually own investment property, two sports cars, and have a pretty nice house paid off for a single guy at 29, but I can't find a decent woman to start a family with.

I tried, before I got to where I am, I got out of a 6 year relationship with a girl who was a software engineer. We were perfect together, honestly. But at the end of the day, she chose pursuing her career in one state, and at the time I pursued my career in a different state in the US, because I wouldn't marry her. Do you think a guy like me was going to follow her around? No. Do you think she's going to find a guy doing better than me now? Slim pickings. She's going to settle for someone willing to follow her around. She texts me hinting at getting back together. Ok buddy.

Yes, if I put my income on Match.com and professionally taken pictures, I get dozens of matches a day, but let's be real, they're not here for my pretty brown eyes.

In what fucking world is it difficult for a successful man to find a decent, loyal woman to marry? I want kids, I want to have a son, but I know that the society as it is will cause a lot of turbulence to my marriage and how I raise my kids, even MORE SO than when I was a popper! Money just makes more problems these days! So what, I have to stop being a man and kill the very nature of myself of being motivated and determined just to keep a family together? GTFO.

Anyway, this phenomenon is true even in countries that were previously highly conservative. Thanks to technology, we've enabled our primal biology to roam incredibly free regardless of where you are. So now guys like me have a super easy time at getting laid, and actually having a functional family feels damn near impossible.

Why do I take the risk? Because what's the alternative? I have friends like that. They are super depressed, playing video games all day, shitty jobs they hate, some even living with their parents. Personally, I'd rather have my problems than be depressed, because at least I feel energetic and strong in my current state, doing things I like. I just can't start a family, which absolutely sucks.
