It seems to me that CPU is the bottleneck as it requires a lot of processing power. For example it feels really slow both on my Intel Core2Duo computer and on my Samsung Galaxy S2 Android phone. On the other hand, it works really fast on 2014 MacBook Pro with Intel Core i7 and it's solid on Nexus 10 tablet (although, this has degraded a lot after upgrading it to Lollipop). The new googles maps has traffic estimates, can show traffic, and it's pretty straightforward to even change your departure times (and show what the traffic will look like when you do). It pops up when you query directions.
