I don't really get the dismissal you're showing here. Why is the expectation that they need to be ascetically pursuing education for its own sake?

To all the 20 year olds, libgen.rs

Library Genesis is great, but it doesn't have much in terms of journal articles. sci-hub did but the attacks on them in Indian courts have made it so they haven't been able to upload new articles since Dec 2020. They only have pre-2020 articles. Anna's archive is basically just a combo of those two sources and some others things.

I really, really miss sci-hub and being able to read research papers. Before sci-hub there were a handful of forums for requesting and fulfilling full text papers. But those forums basically died because sci-hub was so easy and useful. And now that sci-hub is dead there's nothing.

Community college libraries usually have access to the same databases as other higher ed institutions. CC tuition for a single class varies, but under a couple hundred bucks is typical.

The grade goes on your record, though. The time investment to complete the course with a satisfactory grade would negate the time I have to read the material.

I can't even find if they are making this a tax rebatable donation because it's impossible to find information on jstor. Any search with "jstor" in it will include results about papers (which i won't be able to read more than the title/abstract) from jstor and dozen of other sites, because search engines assume I mean "academic papers" with i type "jstor", even in quotes.

And jstor being opaque as it is, it is the perfect recipe for zero discoverability.

It hurts me to see such cynisme. Education is key to lower recidive, and a great way to help those who didn't have the chance to be born with the support they needed to grow free of trouble.

I'm glad those things move forward. If not for the prisoners, for the people they'll be responsible for down the line.

Obviously this brings up the horrible unfairness of Aaron Swartz's treatment, but before you move on I encourage you to further get upset about the entire US prison system. Prisoners are charged high fees for access to basic resources[1]. There is a whole industry in "providing" services to prisoners at lower quality and higher cost. This goes against any notion of just punishment. Consider pushing back against the prison-industrial complex wherever you can.

Adding the term "Ithaka" might help your search, that's the parent company that develops Jstor.

I understand the struggle here. I was interviewing at that company at one point, and it was difficult to do research on them and the Jstor platform for the reasons you listed.
