I think you're annoyed because you like lambda school, the service it offers, the value it provides customers and so on.

On the other hand you see this mighty government unilaterally fining them for providing this service.

However, the problem is the law has to work in the abstract for every case and not just for this benign case.

If they don't ask them to work with the law now, what happens when a terrible institution that doesn't provide value and really takes advantage of its customers opens up?

Then they can say, hey you didn't fine lambda, why are you fining us?

And, worst of all, they would be right.

In the long run, this ought to provide a barrier to entry for sub-par institutions.

(Btw, I haven't gone through lambda or any competitor, and I don't have an opinion as to the quality of the programs).

Not directing this at you, but to all - this is a concrete example of why you shouldn’t blindly trust legal (or medical, or spiritual) advice. Ask questions, make sure you understand, and think critically. No one is infallible.

For what, trying to protect people from being swindled by people claiming to give an education but not? I for one am happy that my state requires people claiming to run schools to go through some sort of vetting process.

Agreed. Do we really need more ITT Tech's or Trump Universities? I think not.

Basically that's Quality Assurance. While Lambda School might be doing good by having the right incentives for all involved parties, a lot of money could be made by tricking people to enroll into questionable schools. So it's for the public good to regulate that market. The question is rather why Lamda School didn't get themselves approved?

Answered elsewhere in thread: Their legal counsel said they didn't need to. The lawyer was wrong, and they now have new legal counsel. Seems like a legit oops which they're since fixed.

Legal advise can be tricky, specially when trying to do something new. I have seen a few situations where this scenario played out

Out of curiosity, was the paperwork cumbersome, or did the old counsel just not know?

note: I considered rewording the "not know" bit since regulations can be tricky, there can be other reasons why they might've felt that the need to register wasn't there. Most of which I feel, for counsels, falls into the didn't know, didn't look category.

Old counsel read the regulation passed by the BPPE and said it didn’t apply to us because we didn’t have physical classrooms. The BPPE disagreed.

It took two people two months full-time to prepare and submit.
