You could try this libpurple plugin for Mattermost [0]. Should work fine with finch if you want it to live in a terminal or tmux session or something, or else Pidgin or Adium if you want a more GUI look.

Haven't tried this plugin myself though.

I was gonna say there's no way slack uses that much, then I actually looked. 750+mb.... What in the world are they doing?

I miss the days where people recognized that using using 20MB of RAM for a trivial task is obscene.

(Great tool, much better than the awful official client, but 20MB is actually a lot of RAM.)

Somebody could probably earn a lot of 'coffees' just building a C++ or Python Gtk UI that works with Slack's API, yeah?

It couldn't be that rough, could it? I've done little interacting with the API's outside of simple bot integrations for a little fun.
