I haven't found noise cancelling headphones that don't cause pressure. And with Bose it's like some weird negative something sensation - like disturbingly quiet. I presume it's what those sound proof rooms feel like from what I've heard described.

I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, and they are so comfortable that I can wear them all day. They also get so quiet that they made me realize that I have tinnitus.

I go for 2-3 walks a day. Might be temperamental but I kind of go insane being in one place all the time. When I was staying with a friend, he had a big house, and I'd constantly go downstairs to get coffee. I didn't even need the coffee, it was just a little change of scenery.

This is me, but for smoke breaks at work. Half the time I don't need the cigarette, I just need the change of scenery to break up the day.

i'm quitting smoking and kind of nervous about what it's going to be like taking breaks without having the excuse of a cigarette to get up and stretch my legs and get fresh air. i bought one of those xteink pocket-sized ereaders and i'm thinking maybe carrying that with me outside and reading for a few minutes will be an ok simulation, along with a nicotine lozenge.

I don't understand it. I'm not sure, but it would seem people hate their own voice? I just love silence. I can't work in anything but complete silence. In open spaces I wear earplugs. I run a lot and I do a lot of work on the property; there are times when my head requires silent decompression and or sorting out my own thoughts and silence is golden; there are times when I want to catch up on the news and/or be distracted from the task at hand and a podcast is great.

At the start of this year I wrote down "Get rid of your Airpods" as a New Years Resolution. This was basically my proxy for "stop filling every spare moment with audiobooks and podcasts". I still haven't done it, and my reflex for listening to something - even after my listening backlogs emptied a few months back - suggests I'm essentially addicted. Especially considering how much better I feel when I don't take my a…

i've also been mindful of this for a few years but it's not something i've thought to talk to others about - imagine telling your friends you're addicted to podcasts.

i still walk around at home with my airpods in like a zombie, but i've found some opportunities to free my brain, like when i'm walking outside in the city for short walks i try to go airpod-free. or when i have a short drive, i listen to the radio (NTS) instead of a podcast and it reeeeallly feels great to feel unplugged and listen to my thoughts and feelings for a bit. i guess the stimulation from those activities (seeing the city, having to drive, etc) helps make it easier to unplug a bit.

other things that are obvious in hindsight: i think it's also easier for me to exist at home without ear heroin when i've slept really well, when i'm not feeling pressured or nervous, and when i'm not amped up on coffee or stims.

Introspection is the act of looking inward to examine your own thoughts, feelings, and motives. It is a personal process of self-reflection that helps you understand why you act and feel the way you do. Pretty much everyone can benefit with some time for introspection. This is considerably easier to do if you have silence and boredom. Music, podcasts, television all hinder the practice of introspection. It takes prac…

> Music, podcasts, television all hinder the practice of introspection. For you. It hinders the process for you . Some people think better when not in complete silence. Anyone that tries to speak broadly and paint everyone with the same brush when talking about neurological phenomena is clearly completely out of touch with the subject. The mind is a wonderfully complex and wholly unique thing. What works for one migh…

This is a pretty well studied and researched area. It is in the research almost universally accepted that silence or white-noise is the most conducive environmental soundscape for introspective thought across all groups.

My version of this was getting rid of my smartphone 6 years ago. Creates a forcing function to be in my own head a lot more often, and I feel like this has given me thinking and attention span superpowers.

But don't you ever find yourself needing a smartphone for just one little thing?

Not even once. There are always alternative ways to solve every problem. The same ways that worked before smartphones usually.

I've had these before and can confirm they're great, noticeably lighter than my current Airpods Max.

FYI: I believe the XM4 is still vulnerable to CVE-2025-20700/20701/20702 if that's a concern for you.

Half the time I have my headphones on playing nothing. I'm just using the noise cancellation to find some silence.

Yeah, I get it. ANC can feel like you're underwater sometimes, but ear plugs won't get rid of that pressure feeling. You'd need an actually quiet room, which I guess is my ideal anyways.
