I grow tired of the MacBook Neo gloating and almost like a light version of bragging in articles like this. It's coded as a critique of the iPad but it feels a lot more like "I'm typing this on a MacBook Neo and it's oh soo amazing!" Apple is essentially selling the modern version of the eMac, and I would say the Neo is almost as bad of a purchase as that product. The real selling point of the device is that it's new…

The Mac Neo is a great product for a large percentage of people out there who wanted to get a Mac that is well made and affordable it is very usable for the overwhelming majority of non tech people that want to use a personal computer today. Most of the tech sites were skeptical still are but thank goodness Apple didn’t listen to them. The same applies to the iPad. It is fine the way it is if I personally wanted a la…

I've used Mac for 20 years and iPad on&off for 10 years.. largely I agree with Craig. Touch on MacOS is basically useless, you won't realize this until you try using an iPad like a MacBook for an extended period of time. Reaching up from keyboard/trackpad to touch the screen quickly gets fatiguing. It is not ergonomic. The iPad is meant to be used in touch mode while in your hands generally. If they were brave they'd…

This is why I’ve never understood the demand for a touchscreen on a laptop. All of my non-Mac laptops have touchscreens, and I basically never use the touch feature except by accident (e.g. a kid pointing and asking a question and causing some code to highlight).

I'm on a convertible as I read this comments thread; I'm typing this comment on the keyboard, and scrolling the comments via the touchscreen.

I have never bought the argument that there should be one modality of input (or output). I'm basically a keyboard guy, but I use a pointing stick, mouse, trackball, or stylus/touchscreen as appropriate. Some applications benefit from direct contact, others really prefer keyboard input. Further, various disabilities prioritize modalities as well: someone may have serious trouble typing or pointing, and visually-impaired people may prefer voice and speech.

So all these rhapsodies of fingers flying across the keyboard or pointing on a touchscreen as the One True Way miss the point. I want my computing devices to support the kind of interaction I want to engage in, which differs from application to application and time to time.

I doubt workers stealing data (which is more frequent than you might think) will just openly post about it... Do you really believe it's normal that banks are on Windows? Do you want governments, military and such to be on Windows, really? >I doubt workers stealing data (which is more frequent than you might think) Can you post a source for this? I'm sure every newspaper on the planet would love to publish headlines reading "MS workers are stealing your data", but that would require some actual proof, not made up FUD. >Do you really believe it's normal that banks are on Windows? I'm not dying on a hill. From a security standpoint, every "trust" step is a security assumption that you cannot verify (especially on a Samsung phone), I'm just not willing to bet my threat model on the "goodwill" of a corporation whose business model is built on data aggregation, there is no proofs needed (MS has had a ton of breaches the last decade btw), but you do you.

Let me ask you something and make an hypothetical and you must reply in good faith, this is because we don't agree on fundamental points on security:

If you were a wanted criminal that still needs to work online somehow to make money, would you feel safe using Windows?

I think we can agree that privacy and security are heavily intertwined. If your honest answer is no,then that alone tells you something about the OS trust model. And if your answer is "yes", then i'd genuinely like to hear why, because I can't think of a single compelling reason.

>>I doubt workers stealing data (which is more frequent than you might think) will just openly post about it. Can you explain what mechanism is there for Microsoft workers to steal data off my Windows PC that doesn't upload anything to OneDrive? Like I'm genuienly curious - how do they do it?

It depends what you consider data, to me for example, all the devices I use in my home, who comes in my home and such are considered private (as it should, but we might disagree on this), but realize that the moment someone steps-in your home, then the typical correlation of SSIDs, BT devices (to simplify it) is sent as telemtry to MS servers (this is official, I'm not just speculating).

And about pure "data" as in filenames file content and such, then obviously typical Windows Defender, Smartscreen and such that would send file hashes, sometimes content, filenames, mod time and such, making Microsoft directly aware of your filesystem content.

The iPad excels in performance. Like I said, if you're using a DAW a regular computer is better. The fact remains that audio apps for the iPad are plentiful and cheap. The App Store only approach has made the iPad a more attractive target than Android by a mile. The iPad apps are also screaming deals. Your comment summarizes the people's inability to appreciate the iPad on its own terms. "You can't run Pro Tools!" is…

This is a cop-out argument, though. I own an iPad, I know that it handles virtual MIDI and recording fine. So does my smartphone! It does not have world-class plugins for synthesis, recording or even performance if we're being honest with ourselves. Without velocity sensitivity or aftertouch, it's already less expressive than a $200 keyboard. > Use a computer for computer workflows, use the iPad for things that it do…

I have no idea what your argument is. Sounds like you bought the wrong device. You yourself admit it can use the same input and controllers as a regular computer but it adds a different interface and way of using it. It offers different types of programs with different kinds of interfaces than regular computers do. If the iPad were just a Mac, which if you’re being honest with yourself is what you actually want, then the current programs would not have been made for it. We would be stuck with what we already have. The MacBook Air already exists. If you want to use Bitwig get the right machine.

Again, your inability to appreciate how the iPad is different and offers a different way of working in no way invalidates what has been created. The combination of a touch first interface and console software distribution has created a unique system. Why people want the iPad to be a Mac or an Android tablet is beyond me.

You first have to answer my challenges to your original statements, on how banks can use Windows without losing money to hackers, and how MS employees access your data, as per your claims.

I first want to see sources hat back up your claims. Otherwise how can we know you're arguing in good faith and not stringing us along with more FUD and tinfoil conspiracies.

Considering you can pick up both a new Macbook Neo AND an iPad from Apple for $200 less than the price of the cheapest (non refurbished) Microsoft Surface you can get from Microsoft, I'm not fully sure the 'apple tax' still exists when comparing to a surface. Microsoft Store: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/devices/surface-lapt... - $1,149 Apple Links: https://www.apple.com/macbook-neo/ - $599 https://www.app…

Unlike Apple, Surface isn't the only option, it is only a beacon how PC hardware should look like. Neo is a robbery for a 8 GB device, especially in Europe. Besides you missed the part of carrying multiple devices.

I don't know what price point you are shopping at, but if you think Neo is 'robbery' I think you are being unfair considering the type and quality of device you can get at the same price point - lots of laptops at the £599 price point are total junk.

Just looking at 8gb doesn't tell you the whole picture - that's like just looking at how many litres a cars engine is as the only part of determining if a car is good or not.

800 euros for 8 GB and 512 SSD powered laptop in 2026 is robbery, regardless how it gets packaged.

And if I want to go with 256 SSD, which is a ridiculous SSD size also in 2026, my Thinkpad had it back in 2014, it is still 700 euros.

As for the Apple distortion field regarding its high quality, unfortunately many people do tend to discover why paying, even extra on top of those 800 euros, for Apple Care matters.

For me it’s not about the numbers It’s 800€ for a laptop that’s not total junk. I could probably get the same 8 or 16 and 512 numbers in cheaper laptops, but they would be [what I would consider] sad annoying plastic junk.
