It's worse than that - the older the layer, the older and typically more powerful the UI you'll find. Such a crazy hodgepodge.

And they've gone such lengths to hide it! An innocuous text link somewhere to the right, hidden between some nondescript lorem ipsum, or somewhere way down where you'd never know to scroll because the scroll bar is hidden by default... it's a great adventure of discovery, so much fun!

I wonder if this will effect any sort of a change in the userbase of Firefox, because that's usually the default browser in most of the distros I've used and I don't think people hate Firefox like they do Edge, where their first move might be to download Chrome (albeit a lot of that might be habit because the new Edge is Chromium in a trench coat anyways).

Yep, it's not really aimed at this style of video editing. Blender is amazingly designed and robust but it's really optimized for 3D design, not editing screencasts.

Have you looked at the new stuff in Blender 5? I've never used it for video editing, but the release notes claim that they did a bunch of stuff with the sequencer in 5.0. https://www.blender.org/download/releases/5-0/#vse

You might want to quote the tagline in the comment. When I visit that link I see "Fresh faced. Timelessly Mac.".

In case English isn't your primary language, "more or less" means "approximately", not "exactly". Sorry about that.

If you visit https://www.apple.com/os/macos/ , Apple touts Apple Intelligence (AI), connecting devices, cloud to increase productivity and, this time a direct quote, "accelerate your workflows". This is more or less the same tagline as Microsoft is pitching.

Somewhat humorously, Apple doesn't seem to mention their agent, Siri on the page at all, but it's being reported a revamped Siri is coming in 2026.

The other problem is things like DRM being increasingly common. Last I checked, many video streaming providers either don't support Linux, or only serve low-quality videos. With Macs you know they'll get support.

Many content rights contracts I see instruct the streaming platforms that they must detect Linux and either give low quality or deny the playback entirely. It's because, rightly or not, they don't trust Linux in comparison to MacOS and view it as a piracy vector.

I think it's because stuff like HDCP pretty much requires a "trusted" (i.e. locked-down) implementation.

Many DAWs are also video editing systems nowadays, I believe Reaper has a decent one.

I have quite some time ago.

I tried 5 just now and while it looks familiar to a standard video editor it's missing a lot of features Camtasia and other video editors mentioned here have.

It also feels like using a spaceship when all I want to do is walk around the block. I like learning new things but to me, efficiency for the things I do a lot wins in the end. I'm sure I can design anything I could ever imagine in Blender but if I need to do a lot of complicated workflows for really basic things every time, all of that gets thrown out the window.

My goto things in a video editor is cutting, ripple delete, adding text callouts with minor effects, highlighting certain areas, zooming into certain areas and wanting to quickly take my original OBS source and render an mp4. Ideally it would run well on lower end hardware and also support 2x playback while editing (saves a lot of time).

English is my first language. I didn't see anything on the page I thought was equivalent to the MS copy. Looking specifically at the 'accelerate your workflows' part it's immediately explained as a way to use AI via the Shortcuts automation app. I think the problem with the MS copy is they're not tying it to real world examples.

I'm sure a lot of people are waiting for peak AI fatigue to jump in with a simple OS that is actually user-friendly and doesn't try to cram an "agentic AI" into your computer with you.
