It might be better with AR, where you still get the ambiance but with virtual monitors.

So moving your head a lot? You would look like a giant weirdo, right?

People 50 years ago would have said that about people who aimlessly slide their thumb up and down a glass screen on a device the size of a deck of cards.

Safari is Apple's usual answer for this kind of thing, and it looks like Safari may be getting WebXR support as we speak: https://twitter.com/rufus31415/status/1357022695553200130

WebXR will not give you the same experience as a native app. For VR you're always pushing the limits of tech. VR in Safari will never be that.

Why do you say that?

> Apple will liberally use an already-known VR technique that involves using eye-tracking to render objects in the user's periphery at a lower fidelity than what the user is focusing on. Should be enough if they don't have to render that full view, but only what the retina is focusing on I would think.

Which suggest and interesting solution: a very small high res display surrounded by much lower res areas that can move around in such a way that it always sits right where the eye is looking.

I think it would be easier, more reliable, and more energy efficient to wait for microled displays, which seem to be right around the corner.

I get the impression that they might be available by the end of the year or next year, and might be something Apple has access to?

Bear in mind that the iPad was rumored to cost >$1000 but then launched at $499. On the other hand it might sense to launch this as a pro-workstation for the usual kinds of task: architects, designers and engineers being able to visualize and interact with models directly in space. If they can make that affordable and usable for pro designers at every level, (which $3500 clearly would be), they will have a hit. A con…

> A consumer gaming device can come later. They had a partnership with Valve back in 2017 for Vive support on MacOS... Just three years later it was canceled. (There were actually more VR games running on Linux at that point than on MacOS, thanks to Proton.) I'm not expecting Apple to try to enter the VR gaming space again anytime soon.

There are more games on the iOS app store than exist on steam.

I don't think apple needs valve or steam's support to make their own VR gaming platform just as they didn't need their support to make iOS a larger app-store for games than steam is.

I could see this as a virtual office, as some of the comments speculate. If I had a set of AR glasses that projected what appeared to be an 8K monitor on top of my dining room table, and integrated with my MacBook Pro for input / output, and that had batteries to last a workday, I’d pay $2K/$3K. Even more if it worked well at brightness levels I’d have in my backyard. Never mind gaming, mobile high-quality virtual of…

That's basically the premise of the Oculus Quest, and my experience with virtual offices there are extremely mixed. I don't even find any of the apps to be particularly bad, but the inconvenience of using VR as a user shell becomes apparent very quickly. Small gestures that used to be a centimeter of movement are abstracted into larger, easier to read gestures that just tire you out. With that being said, I still found a few "professional" uses for it: I was particularly impressed by how easy it was to load up a Blender project and step inside of it.

Laptop + magical AR/VR headset means you can always have your 3 monitor workspace, even at the coffee shop. Plus, you get fully private screens.

Why even have "monitors", just drag your windows around on a hemisphere in front of you that takes up your whole FOV.

Then the next step is apps that are 3D-aware, to let them draw beyond just a flat plane.

Maybe if companies buy it for their employees which makes this an enterprise product like the Mac Pro or software like Logic Pro. It would be insane of Apple to invest billions in development to end up with a product that is not targeted for regular consum…

I mean hololens are the same price.

If Apple’s headset is like a Hololens that would be a turn off honestly. I expect more from them.

There's no way a Mac could render at that resolution when we have 600 dollar 2k headsets severely stressing top of the line gpus.
