The question at issue here is whether RFE/RFA's reporting is known to be reputable. As far as I can tell, it is. (Funding a reputable journalistic organization is entirely consistent with "broadcasting the benefits of freedom", and doing the opposite would probably undermine those goals.) The person who started this thread is trying to discount an RFA report solely because of the source. That seems unwarranted.

RFE/RFA's reporting will never, ever, ever undercut US geopolitical interests.

Is the allegation in this case that RFA is misreporting this story in order to avoid undercutting US geopolitical interests? It seems like the goalposts are moving in a way that still doesn't support the implied accusation.

Article looks fishy. But if China goes down this route, it looks like fears of China economically overtaking the US are overblown.

Agreed. Without sources, this story could be totally made up. That being said, who really knows what the CPC is planning to do with Alibaba right now, if anything.

> But if China goes down this route, it looks like fears of China economically overtaking the US are overblown.

Agreed also. This would be the worst possible thing the government could do to China's tech economy.

Is it me or there's some cognitive dissonance going on with the whole article discussing the ramifications of a nationalization without describing at all what sourced this "news" in the first place? A cursory search seems to show this is a regurgitation on a sourceless Radio Free Asia article ( https://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/alibaba-probe-1225202... ) from December?

Radio free Asia has deep ties to US agencies. It isn’t really a credible source.

This sound like a very credible source then.

No one said that the U.S. doesn't engage in propaganda. But RFA News isn't it. Why is it so difficult for Americans to believe Suggesting that "Americans" suffer from a lack of introspection reveals your own biases. 350 million people. 350 million different worldviews.

So in your view as one of 350 million, RFA is only(or mainly) set up for providing news to brainwashed Chinese people but not promoting democracy and universal human rights value?

I said no such thing. You should not make assumptions about other people.

Stock prices being up is a function of zero / near-zero percent interest rates and the injection of enormous amounts of capital into the system from the Fed just printing, literally, trillions of dollars. Capital has very few "good" places to be allocated at the moment - really for the past decade or so - and COVID-19 put everything into hyperdrive for the tech sector. Economics Explained on YouTube has a good video…

Apple's relative stock price has increased, so the general increase of equity prices doesn't explain this. Low interest rates means that people will search for yields elsewhere, it doesn't intrinsically mean they would settle on Apple outside of solid management.

Doesn't mean anything besides people want to buy Apple stock, for a myriad number of reasons.

Guo Wengui said back in September 2019 that "Jack Ma would be jailed or killed" on Kyle Bass's youtube channel. [1] At this point its not even a question of whether we will see Jack Ma in public again. Overnight he went from billionaire to peasantry. We've seen dozen cases like this: 1) Billionaire disappears or is "killed" 2) Billionaire's company becomes nationalized 3) Rinse & Repeat Everybody who isn't familiar w…

It's sad to see unsubstantiated hearsay as the top comment. I'm sure every billionaire in China has multiple escape routes. Guo Wengui certainly did, nor is he a "peasant."

>Who is praising the CCP's economic rise? A majority of Americans until relatively recently? China was seen favorably by most Americans until the last decade. An economic world power that we should strengthen relations with if polls are to be believed. For example: https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/10/06/unfavorable-vi...

We need to get things straight: everyone should praise the rise of Chinese people's living standards, which has been astonishing in the last 45 years or so, and has taken 850 million people out of poverty[0]! This is not something a reasonable person can argue against! The increase in human wellbeing in the whole planet has been almost entirely due to the Chinese in the last 50 years. That doest' mean we should prais…

Let me congratulate you on a more balanced comment on China than 99% of the users here. It is still a little bit naive or supremacist but dont let us the perfect being enemy of the good.

Entirely possible, probably likely, that it's somewhere in the center. Not all propaganda and not all unbiased

So basically the US version of RT?

That's Voice of America, VOA

You're citing a news article from 1977 as your counterpoint?

RFA is still doing the same thing today. Technology has changed but their mission has not.

It's not the same organization.

The RFA from the 1977 article and the RFA today were separated by 44 years.

Perhaps you're confused because they have the same name.

The era of CCP economic rise is over. Middle income trap and aging demographics dictate as much. CCP will now have to contend with - internal turmoil - political infighting - encirclement by democracies (India, Japan, Australia, US, UK, Canada, France, South Korea, Taiwan). Once Merkel is out in sept 2021, Germany will be onboard - negative sentiment from most of population in the world due to covid - exploding debt/…

Yes, many good points, but some of the same problems exist in the West and in the Asian democracies: covid, debt, aging demographics.

China does have one compelling advantage: its enormous population. Even if a horrible plague or even a civil war happened and 100m people died, they still have plenty of people to accomplish anything they want.

They have Ph.D. scientists, many trained at top Western universities, who are equal to anyone in the West. They are doing an amazing job in manufacturing and technology; virtually all high value objects are manufactured in China, and, increasingly, designed there as well.

They're pushing into automotive and aerospace and every other field. I don't see them slowing down any time soon.
