Nobody would say we should divide the total cost of all USA highway spending by the miles driven by a suburban family to figure out what it should cost them. Or would you? Because that is the most analogous way to what you just offered. My taxes pay for road construction/maintenance/infrastructure. Is the government hiding the true cost of "road freedom"? Heck, the entire interstate system was built with government money.

What about the wars we fight for oil? Tack that onto the cost of cars. Subsidies for parking? Same thing. I could go on and on, but you'll just be embarrassed more.

We absolutely should. And hey, somebody did just that: https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/state/state-infrastructur... - in my state the drivers pay for 95% of road upkeep via direct user fees.

And I'm totally on-board with having drivers pay 100% of road maintenance. As long as transit riders pay 100% of fares.

The US is a net energy exporter. And of course, for urban planning purposes, we can just assume that all future cars will be EVs.

Are you...ignorant of how many of the refugee crises are because of climate change? Like literally right now? In 2024 alone, about 40M people were displaced due to climate change, and that's a doubling from ten years ago.
