Right. Your suggestion seemed to be that's the path we should go down - the restaurant industry, which has a very high failure rate. Or do we become master electricians? This isn't the 1950s - spending is down everywhere, costs are up, interests rates are high.

I'm not the original poster, but your notion that starting a business is for financially independent "made men" was just dumb and out of touch. There's a reason immigrants are frequently restauranteers and laundromat owners, and it's not because they came over with millions.

If you expect to switch right over from tech and make 200k, you will be sorely disappointed. If you expect to be destitute you may be quite surprised.

Also the failure rate for restaurants is on par with the failure rate for other service providing businesses. The fact that the number includes so many uneducated, inexperienced, frankly average or below average intelligence people who open restaurants should indicate to you that it's not really that impossible of an endeavor.

Up until the 1960s, there weren't that many things the US consumer felt they 'needed'. Heck, even in the 1980s, people considered a microwave, cable television, air conditioning (in most places), a second car, televisions throughout the home, etc., a luxury. There still aren't that many things the American consumer needs... they just perceive they do. In the past, consumers prioritized their wants better, probably because they had no choice. A whole lot fewer people had a whole bunch of credit and credit was rarely used for that sort of thing.

Of course the American consumer is dissatisfied. It thinks it is buying out things that aren't and never were for sale, like parts of a jigsaw puzzle called 'the american dream', earning a piece for every time it feels compelled to do somethink like plop down $1200 on a backyard grill. but there is no bigger picture. It's just stuff. Sometimes good stuff to have (god bless cool air in a heatwave). But stuff we didn't feel judged not to have before.

Well, there you go. I couldn't have found a better example. Nice turn of phrase, that "cultist fucking clown". But your pessimism will likely motivate few listeners and your anger will drive them away. Perhaps you might examine the underpinnings of your beliefs to determine the source of your pessimism.

FWIW I don't worship anybody and, while I admire the gracefulness of your offer, especially given your anger, I must reply "No, thank you!". Perhaps you can find another, more willing recipient for your furious hard-on.

Perhaps b/c my history is not "full of this."?

But I have recently begun to use the term "TDS" b/c it describes handily a commonly recognized aberrant behavior. Also b/c it has gained some credence toward becoming a word in the English language. I expect "TDS" to be promoted soon into various dictionaries. Unfortunately that very acronym is already in use in medical scripts (prescriptions) for the Latin phrase "ter die sumendum," meaning "to be taken three times a day."

Which might cause some confusion, such as:

- Must TDS occur 3 times a day to be diagnosed properly?

- Must every good cultist practice TDS 3 times a day?

- etc.
