Whatever is going on here, is so magnificently complicated: sockpuppeting, doxxing, ddosing, psyops, pirating, FBI, cyberpunk capitalists, Russian hackers and Finnish activists. Somehow it does feel like in the middle of information war.

When I read the original article it doesn't really feel like the Finnish guy is even an activist. He seems to be just a curious nerd who wrote one article about this topic (who's behind this big site that everyone uses) and about a whole load of completely unrelated and non-activist topics like why did Japan stop building subway lines. Then his blog gained some traction because of the reporting around the FBI threats…

>The article is also really appreciative of archive.today. It doesn't feel like a hit piece at all.

That's why it's all so bizarre. The OP claims to be supportive of archive.today, but simultaneously publishes an article detailing his attempt at doxing the owner.

It's hard to see how OP could be acting in good faith here, if they truly meant no harm and were as appreciative of archive.today as they claim to be, they'd just have taken down the article.

It's on gitflic.ru now.

Hmm yeah but their adversaries did achieve their goal by pushing it away from the mainstream sites. Now we're into this situation of "how much do I trust this vague Russian site with my browsing activity". At least the addon declares the sites it's for and ignores the rest but still I'm a lot less comfortable with it. It's more something I'd install in a container now, limiting its usefulness :( In practice I just us…

Yeah it's unavoidable. Bypassing paywalls is not a good idea for tools that depend on browsers' stores distribution.

Ghostarchive does a decent job for the same sites in my experience: https://ghostarchive.org/

Update: hmm seems like they're involved in this whole thing too somehow, how strange: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46629646

That comment is weirdly confusing/confused. But if you try archiving any site on ghostarchive, or clicking on any existing ghostarchive links, it just says "site is down for maintenance".

For now I've given up on using any archiving sites until we can find a safe and reliable alternative.

Archive.today does not seem to have worked for people connecting from Finland since mid-January, it just gives an endless captcha loop. Is this related to whatever this drama is?

I have had similar issue here in Finland for many weeks. Glad to hear it's not just me.

Shame, as I was using it alot for archiving different pages.

Gyrovague here. As linked in the blog entry, you can view both sides of the email correspondence here: https://pastes.io/correspond As for outcomes, I'm very much a bit player/spectator in this drama, nobody's going to be "taking them down" over DDOSing an obscure nerd blog. If they do go down, it'll be the FBI or equivalent, and it will be publicly justified as some combination of "protecting the children" (cf. WAAD…

> As linked in the blog entry, you can view both sides of the email correspondence here: https://pastes.io/correspond Thanks, I must have missed this. > [...] nobody's going to be "taking them down" over DDOSing an obscure nerd blog. > If they do go down, it'll be the FBI or equivalent, and it will be publicly justified as some combination of "protecting the children" (cf. WAAD) and/or copyright violations. Yes, this…

it is not a small personal conflict, it is two years of non-stop escalation, gyrovague not only wrote the doxx, he is obsessively pushes it to the media:

2023: https://boingboing.net/2023/08/05/the-internets-other-archiv...

2024: https://gigazine.net/gsc_news/en/20240326-archive-today/

2025: the FBI story on many news sites

all these media articles are about gyrovague, archive doxx here is only fuel to promote gyrovague's blog

it must be stopped somehow

I don't think these two are exactly equivalent. Internet Archive is a registered non-profit organization. It is more trustworthy and accountable, but it cannot realistically stand against government-imposed censorship. We've seen this unfold before with Twitter and Meta, partly with Telegram. Archive.today may be similar on the surface, but if you take a closer look, it's actually an underground "evil twin" that has…

Internet Archive's trustworthiness took a hit when they waded into fact checking - https://blog.archive.org/2020/10/30/fact-checks-and-context-... and wiping content they disapproved of - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32743325

> Literal scum of the earth engaging in coordinated harassment campaigns to get people they hate kill themselves, and celebrating their "success"

Sure, the problem with Kiwi Farms is that people "disprove of them", not what they disprove of. KF were even blocked by CloudFlare, who have a very strong neutrality policy, that's how toxic, hateful and illegal they were.

I simply don't agree with that, either. It just seems like journalism to me. No details were reported that would reasonably be expected to compromise anyone's safety. Why should it be disallowed to investigate the ownership of a website? People used to do this all the time when they were going to order products from a web store they'd never used before, to try to deduce if it was trustworthy. They'd look up the owner…

What a bizarre take. >It just seems like journalism to me. What does that even mean? Are you trying to suggest that journalism is inherently okay? A piece of despicable journalism simply cannot exist? >No details were reported that would reasonably be expected to compromise anyone's safety. So it's okay because he failed at what he set out to do? I'd counter that regardless of whether or not the doxing was successful…
