Maybe they are working on converting third party sign in's (google accounts) to match with replacement accounts? Currently there's no way to convert an established account created using other sites, without creating another account, & one can't transition an account over. Maybe they are addressing this issue? API is development, could even be a third party update requirement.

I just have a plain old, non-checked account. I occasionally use an unfollower service that uses this API thing (What even is API?), but I don't see how that's grounds for denying me or…

The web version of Twitter is an "app" of its own, so you're using an app that interact with API using API key, no matter what. And they messed that up.
