But can you be banned from doing business with millions of other people for offending the gatekeeper?

Why should Epic get to enjoy a market that Apple built without giving Apple anything or following the rules of the platform? Should anybody be able to post anything they want on HN or YouTube or Facebook etc.? They can't. Does Epic allow anyone to sell content for Fortnite without giving Epic any money? They don't.

Actually developers built the market. Without that Apps on the App store, the iPhone is worth almost nothing.

What I find confusing about Epic's approach is taking on Google at the same time. It seems like you'd have some leverage at forcing Apple to the table if you were exclusive on Google, for instance -- and then, after winning, you could be exclusive on Apple for a while to cut a similar deal with Google. All your leverage comes from kids wanting to only have a device that plays their favorite game where they hang out w…

I think Epic are going to announce a new piece of hardware in the coming months. A phone that can play many games in their library. Both Google and Apple are trash at games and Epic know this. Theres a lucrative niche.

Is it going to be called "Nintendo Switch"? Because Fortnite is on there, plays really well, and I'm not sure what Epic is going to bring to the table to outclass it.

How is this legal? Apple is so blinded by their arrogance that they don't see that this will lead to the App Store getting severely regulated.

Look at Uber for a great example. It took years, but Uber and Lyft were finally handed a business-destroying law that will hurt them. It will only take a few months for the rest of the US to adopt similar strategies as well.

After the congressional hearings a few weeks ago, Apple still doesn't understand what is going on around them. If they keep going this route, they will absolutely get themselves regulated and frankly I hope this happens. Their arrogance is disgusting to me and I hope this eventual come-to-Jesus moment will scare the shit out of them.

Note that this applies to Mac systems, not just IOS. Apple is trying to prevent Unreal Engine from working on any Apple-controlled platform. So, if you're a gamer or a game developer, do not buy a Mac . Developers now using Macs need to be planning an exit strategy.

Or switch to Unity

Usually when you fire a customer they can go to one of your competitors. This just proves Epic's argument. There is no competing App Store on iOS because it's not allowed. If Apple "fires" you then your users can no longer install the app onto their own phones. Imagine if Microsoft "fired" Adobe and as a result nobody could install Photoshop on Windows anymore.

Microsoft can fire game developers from Xbox.

But doing so wouldn't make that developer's software unusable on Windows.

Some might see a difference between "a developer who went public about their frustrations with the App Store" and a developer who deliberately violated the policies and then filed a lawsuit and started an extensive PR campaign.

> a developer who deliberately violated the policies Are you talking about Netflix?

I'm unaware of any current legal action Netflix is taking against Apple.

Companies shouldn't be allowed to fire customers that blatantly break rules the customer agreed to?

Arguments of this form always rely on nebulous definitions of what counts as a "choice." Sure, if you're banned from a specific app store, you cannot use that specific app store, because that's just what is means to be banned. You can, of course, still access any other app store.

Being banned from the iOS App Store also doesn't make your software unusable on Windows, or Mac, or any other non-iOS platform. The App Store's exclusivity is precisely the same as that of nearly every video game console.

Epic can sell iTunes gift cards and earn back some of that 30%.

This makes as much sense as saying "just work extra hours to earn back taxes".

Another analogy would be “work extra hours for the government to earn back taxes.”

We pay taxes and government pays employees and contractors.

Epic pays Apple and Apple pays retailers.

Free games? That's what they do on PC. Nintendos biggest weakness on it's handhelds since the beginning has been almost no sales (as in Steam sales).
