Man do I love Hackernews. Everyone is pro-innovation, pro-future, pro-forward thinking until literally anything new happens, in which case everyone shows up with a "well, ackshually", to tell you why the new idea is dumb. Because people keep saying shit like that. Tesla's range increases are a giant experiment to find out at exactly what point opposition to electric collapses.

This is impressive. Almost 650 Km. Conservatively, let's say 600 Km, it's very very impressive.

My daily commute is 30 KM, I can go 20 days without charging. Back of the napkin suggests that if I charge overnight in my garage, I can go without super charger charging for more than a month and a half. This is no small feat.

My understanding is that the Taycan was seriously screwed by having its track modes, which are genuinely very inefficient, blended equally in to the test. It's a bit of a shame to see so many Tesla fans point to its supposed inefficiency based on the EPA range. Can we have an EV for people who don't suffer from range anxiety and are willing to trade that off for cost?

I travel 5000km (3000mi) a year, longest single day use 50km (30mi). Vehicle is garaged with access to power. I just need 100km (60mi) (double to be sure :) ) range at an affordable cost.

So .. a used Nissan Leaf is good for you. 70-100 mile range. Probably < $12k

They were not faked. Cars were optimized to behave in a certain way under exact test scenario. They were not producing any fake output data from the sensors, just "optimizing" engine behavior.

They didn't output fake data, true, but their "optimization" was to only activate emissions controls during testing. That's fraud.

Alrighty here's the first graph. Note that this is average speed, so any trips with an average speed near the right by definition have some parts of the trip faster than the average, so the actual drop at 80 mph isn't quite as severe as it looks. https://imgur.com/a/c10NXaz the reason for the cutoff is that because it's pretty hard to have a trip with an AVERAGE speed above 80mpg. It's very rare in my large dataset.

I wonder that too. My guess is there's an outlier datapoint or two there messing with the average. I didn't pull out outliers.

(Since the data is smoothed, an outlier datapoint could influence speeds 2mph in each direction)

That's incorrect. Power consumption is proportional to drag * speed, and drag is speed^2, so power is speed^3, and energy per mile is speed^2.

EPA range is city+highway combined, which isn't really what any most car buyers care about. Range during city driving is irrelevant beyond a point; you're never going to go more than 100 miles per charge. Then the highway test is easy; it never breaks 60 MPH and averages 48 MPH. What most people probably care about is how far you can go between charges when road-tripping, which is really a much more complicated formu…

If I drove my Tesla S on the freeway at 48 mph then I would easily match the EPA rating.
