Honestly not what I expected to hear about Moxie. Any more tales that back this up? If this line of behavior is true then I think it's time to move on.

Quite something for an open source project to use DMCA of all mechanisms to remove an unofficial distribution, but alright, maybe there's a trademark issue.

Sounds like someone should change the icons and change the name to make the unofficial Signal snap look properly unofficial. Should protect the application from Signal's controlling tendencies as well as their open source code can and should be redistributed freely.

This is basically my feeling with PopOS as well. I bought a System76 laptop and decided to stick with PopOS (which came pre-installed) to try it out instead debian (which I usually run), but it's felt very much like a "our way or the highway experience". I'm moving off it and back to debian once I have the chance.

keybase.io has been great, although it's not without its risks either since it was acquired by Zoom. It's still up and seemingly maintained but AFAIK there's no new feature work. I've heard WhatsApp recommended from people I trust, but I have never personally used it so can't speak from experience.

WhatsApp seems like a non-starter based on this list of complaints. It’s hard to imagine someone who doesn’t trust Moxie, but does trust Zuck.

It's because Zoom / Jetbrains haven't stepped up to package their software as flatpak, so volunteers got in there. There's a flathub policy that a flatpak project will be handed over to the vendor to maintain if they make that request - which is definitely good, but the fact of those volunteers being able to do this (however well intentioned) is not.

Zoom isn't required to "step up" and use your favorite packager or distribution mechanism.

A lot of people moved to Signal because of WhatsApps changes so that advice can thought of as misleading at best.

Your suggested alternatives are owned by Zoom and Facebook. I'll stick with Signal.
