It's pretty simple. Excessive egress costs = vendor lock in, and yes, forcing third party services into the same cloud (the walled garden), and limiting customer choice. Just another reason so many orgs are getting heartburn from going too deep too fast into the cloud.

A big part of the problem is that software development has wrapped itself around cloud native. Sure that metal server has brain melting performance for nothing, but try provisioning it or running it. Nobody knows how and we are dependent on stacks like K8S that require an ops team to run. Assumedly, implementing the logic yourself for transcoding source content into various encodings on demand. If you're storing 1080p h265 MP4s in R2 and the client can only support 480p h264 it'll request that but you need to "appropriately transcode" for them. Residential usually has some kind of hard data cap. Like if you transfer >10TB they'll just cut you off. You're also generally barred from running any kind of commercial application.
For example, AT&T fiber has no bandwidth caps and offers symmetric 1-10 gigabit service in an ever expanding number of areas throughout the US. I pay $55/mo for 1gbps service, and have done more than 100TB/mo for many months and it's fine.
