This is a really well-written comment. Thank you very much. I'm Singaporean (though currently based in San Francisco) and identify myself as a supporter of the PAP. I am currently traveling, and unfortunately got hold of LKY's passing a little late (though I had been following his health the past few days) and still feeling a little shell-shocked. I am personally very disappointed at all the comments on HN - most of…
How does reciting a pledge and serving in an army prove to someone their leader's genius? Something I frequently noticed working for a company with a Singaporean headquarters was confusion between authority and logic.

#152I've lived in Singapore for almost 5 years already and have recently switched citizenships (my son would have to serve in Singapore's military service once he reaches the appropriate age). I have come to appreciate Singapore's style of governance. The sheer efficiency and reliability of government service still surprises me to this day. Having come from the Philippines where bribing somebody in the government to get…

Well, as a gay Singaporean, I assume you are familiar with section 377A of the penal code that makes having sex or trying to pick up a date punishable by two years in prison? And that your parliament is basically unanimously in favor of retaining it, with overwhelming public support?
Yes, and I fought for its repeal along with other members of civil society. There was no overwhelming public support. In the only show of overwhelming public support was when fundamentalist Christians (who are not affiliated with the government) took over a feminist organization and overwhelming public support for the feminists and homosexuals pushed them out. I'm not comfortable with blanket statements about Singapo…
Convenient of you to blame it all on the fundamentalist Christians (purely colonial Western influences, no doubt), when any identified Christians are 18% and there's as many Anglicans as mega-churchers. Your Chinese Buddhists are clinging to this law, the Muslims and Christians are fellow-travelers. Majority wat!

Let me clap for you because you have 2715 karma, you who look to have wasted all these trips to our region (how can you travel so much, yet absorb so little). Our entire nation is in mourning, but please do feel free to take keep taking uneducated potshots at a dead man using recycled sound-bites from the 90s, and displaying exactly why freedom of speech is overrated. We will return to pit our unsubstantiated anecdot…
You make personal attacks instead of offering any form of logical refutation. Further, Singapore isn't a nation, it's a private holding company with brainwashed worker-drones, prostituting itself to foreign powers for the 'stability' of island-capitalism and a totalitarian reign. Otherwise, you are of course entitled to your opinion... but according even to your close ally's founding father, neither liberty nor safet…
But seriously, we're glad you're here. In the midst of our mourning, we have serious commentators from China coming out to say that we're not Chinese enough, and on the flip side, serious commentators from the USA saying that we're not democratic enough (you just can't win with some people). It's refreshing to have a mental midget whose rambling personal attacks on our very recently departed founder and country are neither backed by credible source or citation (yes bob, we know that your 5 year old nephew told you that if it is on youtube it must be true, but that's not how adults play) that we can all go to town on. So from the depths of my heart, thank you bob!
And since you like hyperlinks, here's a good one:

What a surprise that you're an American who believes that your visits to such locations give you the divine right to tell us off (looking at your ignorant comments in the other threads). And that you would use 'lah' inappropriately.
More baseless personal attacks. I'm neither American nor ignorant, and non-Singaporeans can surely see that. I am however deeply troubled by the assertion that my use of 'lah' may have been judged inappropriate! Singlish is clearly both stylish and useful, and has a definitively bright future in brainwashing, lah. Keep the language pure, latte. Live life on the edge: have another coffee. Political opposition indeed.…
Ooh! I want to share interesting but humourous anecdotes too! Tell us where you're from. Wait. Never mind.
I went to wherever you're from 346 times since 1964, did my political science PhD dissertation on wherever you're from, and in my most recent visit had meals with political cognoscenti from wherever you're from and we discussed the impact of global warming on the long term survival of low lying island nations while taking in cosi fan tutte at the local opera house. Oh, and they privately confessed to me that wherever you're from is shit.
Hey bob, don't be contrary. My first-hand account is as backed up as yours, and any person who is not from wherever you're from can SURELY see that (this logic is impenetrable, since if they are not from wherever you're from, they must be the last word on the situation wherever you're from).
Cheers bob!
