I am surprised that any ad networks allow these links. It ine of the few things that makes me want to install an ad blocker.

It's why I do use adblockers. I try to disable them on sites that don't do anything nearly this scummy, which is frustrating because stuff like Paint.net I otherwise want to support.

Maybe. Myself I just used the "If you’re using Paint.NET v3.5.x, go to the Utilities menu and click on “Check for Updates.” path. I would also like to have a confirmation from HN if the developer indeed make a living only out of Paint.NET.

The developer of Paint.NET works for Microsoft. Thus, he does not "make a living only out of Paint.NET."

Of course, that does not say whether or not he could live off Paint.NET if he wanted to.

I realize this might normally qualify as a throw-away comment on HN, but, "Good grief!"

People who aren't familiar should take a look: I hadn't realized how bad it's gotten.

People like my mother (just helping her the other day) would be totally stymied by this. And... I guess I can be glad my sister just got a Mac.

(Speaking of which, why is there an ad for "Free Zip for Mac" on a page for a .NET dependent Windows program?)

I had a similar situation and came across... "Pinta" (Linux), I think it was. Did enough while retaining relatively simple and straight-forward controls. (It was no Paint.NET, but neither was it the beginner-adverse Gimp.)

I'd have to have another look to refresh my memory, and it was only a brief need, but might be worth having a look.

P.S. And of course, for vector graphics, "Inkscape".

And, oops: I see now that someone else mentioned Pinta already.

When it was first released, it worked quite well under mono on Linux. (so I guess also on Macs, but I never tried) Is that not the case anymore? Edit: The Internets claim that ported paint.net 3 exists as paint.mono. Not version 4 though :(

Hopefully the general public will soon learn to avoid the big green "Download here" arrows too.

But then the ad-makers will probably come up with something else instead.

heck, I downloaded some random program while trying to install it a few weeks ago - and I've got a compsci MSc from Oxford.

I did the same about 6 months ago trying to grab speedfan for someone else in the office. I never had any trouble before cause adblock and so didn't even think to be careful :(

I agree. I went all Linux years ago, and Paint.NET, minesweeper, and Irfanview are the major things that I miss.

GIMP doesn't take that long to start now, though. I missed Paint.NET a lot more when the GIMP took longer to load.

I actually run paint.net inside a windows vbox on OS X. Pixelmator doesn't cut it. People say paint.net is simple but it's actually very powerful. It's just designed so well that it fools people into thinking it's simple.

It's designed to look like Paint :)
